She is the president of the Lakes Region Seniors and will also be your contact to get information about joining the very active group.

American Legion Meets

On Wednesday, Aug. 7, the American Legion Post 148 will meet at Windham Veterans Center. The social hour is at 5 p.m. with business meeting following at 6 p.m. The main topic of discussion will be the annual pig roast.

Library Closed Friday Mornings

The Windham Public Library is closed from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays, temporarily, while the search for a library director is ongoing. Notification will be made when they resume regular hours.

Happy 80th!

Walter “Bud” Tackett had a surprise awaiting him at Rustler’s Restaurant in Windham on Sunday, July 21. His wife, Helen, along with family and friends greeted him there to celebrate his 80th birthday and have lunch and cake.

Bud had a career in the U.S. Navy and retired as a chief. After the Navy, he worked as an engineman in the private sector. After fully retiring, he has been a hospital “cheer volunteer” visiting patients, playing golf and vacation traveling around the world.

Car Wash Fundraiser

Windham High School Girls Volleyball Team is holding a car wash at NAPA Auto Parts in North Windham from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. This is a fundraiser for the organization.

Windham Center Stage Theater will present “Legally Blonde: The Musical” at the Community Center stage (town hall) from July 26 to Aug 4. Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students/seniors, $12 for adults.

Engagement Announced

It is with great joy, that Greg and Bonnie Dwyer of Wayne, N.J., along with Steven and Beth Cantor of Windham, announce the engagement of their children, SarahMaura Dwyer and Zachary Cantor. Zach, who graduated from Windham High School in 2007, met SarahMaura while attending Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H. They graduated from Daniel Webster in 2011. SarahMaura graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Flight Operations. She is a pilot employed by Cessna Aircraft as Regional Sales Associate for Citation business jets. Zach graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. While at Daniel Webster, Zach was a baseball captain for 3 consecutive seasons. Zach recently graduated as Valedictorian from DeVry University in New Jersey with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology. He is employed in the Neuroscience Department of JFK Hospital in Edison, N.J. SarahMaura and Zach currently reside in Wayne, N.J. and are planning to wed in September 2014.

New Medicare Seminar

On Tuesdays, Aug. 6 and 20, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham.

A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 207-396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location.
