New before- and after-school programs

Regional School Unit 5’s Recreation and Community Education is offering a new aftercare and kinder care program starting in the fall at the Pownal Elementary School. Kinder care hours in Pownal are projected as 11:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m., or 11:45 a.m. -5:30 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays. Programming will be designed to enhance the kindergarten curriculum. Aftercare will be 3:30-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (pre-K to Grade 5).

The Laugh and Learn child care before- and after-school programs in the fall, located at the Morse Street School (K-2) and Mast Landing School (3-5) in Freeport, the Durham Community School (K-5) and the Pownal Elementary School (pre-K to 5).

Morning hours begin at 7 in Freeport and Durham. During the morning, children are provided a variety of craft projects and creative centers within the classroom. After school, there is time for play on the playground equipment, on the school trails or in the gymnasium. Also, the program provides an environment for children to do their homework and/or receive assistance with their studies. A healthy snack is provided during the aftercare portion of the day. The aftercare day ends at 5:30.

VBS runs July 29-Aug. 2

Vacation Bible School will be held Monday July 29-Friday Aug. 2, from 9-11:15 a.m., at First Parish Congregational Church, 422 Hallowell Road, Pownal. Children ages 5-12 will enjoy Bible stories, crafts, games and snacks. All children are welcome. For more information, call 688-4791.

Church hosting beans and spaghetti supper

The North Pownal United Methodist Church, Lawrence Road, will be holding a public baked bean and spaghetti supper on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 4:30-6 p.m. Tickets are adults $6, children 4-12 years $3, and three years and under, no charge.

Free lunch for kids

There will be free meals to all kids and teens age 18 and under at four sites in Freeport: Freeport Community Center, Mast Landing School, Morse Street School and Village View Apartments Community Room. Returnables sought to support fire-rescue

The Pownal Fire Co. works to support the Pownal Fire & Rescue Department. In addition to providing food during fires and trainings, the organization purchases work uniforms and equipment for the town’s emergency personnel. The money the fire company is able to donate toward these items helps to keep the fire department’s expenses down. The organization seeks donations of returnable bottles and cans to help fund its work. The Pownal Fire Co. is independent from the town of Pownal and the Pownal Fire and Rescue Department.

Food pantry on Tuesday

The North Pownal United Methodist Church food Pantry on 851 Lawrence Road is open every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.-noon. Offerings usually include different kinds of breads, produce, desserts, etc. All are welcome.

Men’s breakfast

The Men’s Breakfast at the First Parish Congregational Church of Pownal, 422 Hallowell Road, is held the first Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the church. It is open to any men who want to come. They do not have to be affiliated with the church. The Rev. John Wentworth leads the discussions.

12-step meetings
