UNE expert on aging will speak at Senior Expo
Dr. Marilyn R. Gugliucci will be the featured speaker at the Senior Expo, scheduled Wednesday at the Kennebunk Elementary School.
Gugliucci will speak at 11 a.m. on changing the stereotypes associated with aging in a talk titled “The Aging ‘Loco’motion: You Can’t be Idle on a Moving Train!”
She is the director for Geriatrics Education and Research at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and director of UNE Exercise and Conditioning for Easier Living Fitness/Wellness Program for older adults.
The Senior Expo is free, and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 177 Alewive Road.
Forty vendors are expected to showcase products, services, home health care, senior living options and other information for seniors and their families at the expo. Workshops, demonstrations and antique appraisals will be offered with proceeds to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Tour of Sunken Garden scheduled for Thursday
Historic New England’s Cathy Messmer will explore the creation of the Sunken Garden plot, located on the site of the former Hilton House Hotel, which burned to the ground in 1903.
The program begins at 10 a.m. Thursday with a lecture in the Nickels-Sortwell House barn at 121 Main St. that includes a look at other sunken gardens created by women in the same period.
A tour of the Sunken Garden will follow.

Introductory kayaking class at Chickawaukie Pond
An introduction to recreational kayaking class will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Chickawaukie Pond.
Instructor Bill Michaud will teach entry-level kayaking techniques, including basic strokes, skills and safety information.
Attendees should gather at the Chickawaukie Pond public boat launch at 8:45 a.m. at Johnson Memorial Park, Route 17.
Fee is $20, payable to the instructor.

Kayaks, paddles and life vests will be provided.

Friends of Libby Library plan book sale Saturday
The Friends of Libby Library will hold their annual “Christmas in July” Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of Edith Belle Libby Memorial Library, at 27 Staples St.
This event will feature bargain-priced books of every genre for adults and children as well as Christmas-themed items for sale.
Proceeds will be used to enhance children’s reading programs, materials and activities at the library.

Salvation Army schedules annual indoor sale Saturday
The Salvation Army will hold its annual indoor sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Salvation Army Tabernacle at Union Avenue and Sixth Street.
Jewelry, household goods, books, baked goods and handcrafted items will be sold.
There also will be breakfast and luncheon items available for purchase.
Proceeds of the sale will be used to assist with various projects and programs to benefit many individuals located in the community and funds that will support the world mission program.

Harmon Museum opens with exhibit on churches
Harmon Museum has opened for the 2013 season, featuring the new exhibit “Churches, Temples and Tabernacles,” a look at how Old Orchard Beach residents and visitors have worshiped over the past 150 years.
The exhibit encompasses the time from when the town’s spiritual needs were served by an occasional “circuit rider” minister up to the present day.
In addition to the churches exhibit, there is an expanded display of artifacts from Old Orchard Beach police and fire departments; an updated display about the Kite Track, a major stop on the pacers-and-trotters circuit, located in the area of Walnut Street and Portland Road; and a newly-acquired pictorial display of the trolley system that carried people to and from Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough and Portland.
The museum is located at 4 Portland Ave.
Operating hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
Admission is free and donations are welcome.
Parking is available behind the bank and on nearby streets.

The Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District will host a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on how to restore old hay fields.
Rick Kersbergen, a Waldo County Extension educator in Sustainable Dairy and Forage Systems, will address weed problems and how to manage your fields to keep them under control.
Both chemical and non-chemical methods of control will be discussed.
The program will be held at the Extension office at 377 Manktown Road.
