TOPSHAM — Construction of a medical center at The Highlands senior housing development is due to start this month and be complete at the beginning of next year.

The 11,500-square-foot public facility, to be built by Landry/French Construction of Scarborough and run by Mid Coast Medical Group, will house the adult primary care practice Mid Coast now operates at Bowdoin Mill.

“The new location represents a great partnership between Mid Coast and the Highlands, allowing for easy access to high quality health care for residents of The Highlands, Highland Green, and the entire Topsham community,” Mid Coast spokeswoman Judith Kelsh said Tuesday.

Matt Teare, director of development for Sea Coast Management, the development company for The Highlands and Highland Green, said Sea Coast “wanted to have a health-care partner and a wellness presence on our campus.”

The facility will be off Governor’s Way and Community Way, with frontage on the Coastal Connector. The project will join the headquarters of the American Red Cross on commercial lots that front on Route 196.

The Planning Board granted the project site plan approval last month, and the developer obtained a building permit earlier this month.
