Chicken Barbecue
The New Gloucester Fire-Rescue Auxiliary will be sponsoring its annual chicken barbecue, Saturday, July 13, from noon until all the chicken is gone. It will be held at the New Gloucester Fire Station at 611 Lewiston Road. Children’s games will add to the fun. Tickets will be on sale at the door. The cost will be $4 for ages 4-11, and $8 for ages 12 and up.
Lavender Workshop and Hand-Spinning
Learn how to grow, cultivate and use the favored herb lavender at a workshop to be held Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Instructor Betsey-Ann Golon combines her experience as herbalist at Shaker Village, along with her tenure at George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon estate. The fee is $40.
Come see the R&R Spinners, a Maine group of hand-spinners, process fibers and show their traditional skills and creations at a free demonstration on Saturday, July 13, beginning at 10 a.m. A variety of antique and contemporary spinning wheels will be used.
Make a beautiful table runner in the classic ‘game board’ pattern at a beginners’ quilting workshop, Saturday, July 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A material list will be provided upon registration. The fee is $28.50, which includes the cost of a pattern, and the workshop is open to ages 12 and up.

Running and Archery Programs for Vets
Veterans Adaptive Sports and Training (VAST) is offering two programs this summer, now through Wednesday, Aug. 28. Running is open to all veterans and meets Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. Training programs will be available to get in shape for the first VAST fundraiser – a 5K and 10K running race this fall. No running experience is necessary.
Adaptive Archery, open to all veterans with physical disabilities, TBI and PTSD, will be held Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. No experience is necessary. 20-pound pull compound bows, targets and instruction are provided free of charge. All veterans who are interested in volunteering are welcome.

Model Plane Demo
Spectators will be wowed by watching radio-controlled model aircraft maneuvers performed by some of the best International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) pilots on the East Coast and in Canada. At competitive events, IMAC pilots fly in different skill level classes performing a prescribed set of aerobatic maneuvers, using an airplane that is a scale model of a full-size aerobatic airplane.
Skystreakers R/C Club will be hosting an IMAC contest on Saturday and Sunday, July 20-21, at Skystreakers Field, off Bald Hill Road (near the transfer station) in New Gloucester. Flying will occur from approximately 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Spectators are welcome, and admission and parking are free. Lunch, including hamburgers and hot dogs, is available for purchase.
Groundbreaking
The New Gloucester Planning Department invites the public to come to the groundbreaking of the New Gloucester Water System. The ceremony will be held Friday, July 19, 10 a.m. at the New Gloucester Fairgrounds, 106 Bald Hill Road. If inclement weather, the ceremony will be held under a tent on-site.
Vacation Bible School
New Gloucester Bible Church, Route 100, will hold “A Cyberspace Adventure,” featuring fun and games, arts and crafts, gymnastics, Bible lessons, songs, and tasty treats, for ages 3-12. This Vacation Bible School will run Monday-Friday, July 15-19, 9 a.m.-noon. Teens are welcomed to come and help out. Arrive early on Monday morning, July 15, to register. Open Farm Day
Fourteen businesses in New Gloucester will be participating in Open Farm Day, Sunday, July 21. They are Acker’s Acres Angoras, Donna’s Greenhouses, Foggs Hill Farm, Intervale Farm, Norumbega Farm, Pineland Farms, Queen’s Land Farm Alpacas, Rite Chocolate, Running Brook Farm “Ewes to You”, Shadow Hill Farm Alpacas, Terry’s Country Candies, The Farmers Eight Daughters, Thompson’s Orchard, and United Society of Shakers.
