PORTLAND — Maine Public Broadcasting’s A.J. Higgins was recently named among the four best political reporters in Maine, according to the Best State-Based Political Reporters of 2013 list compiled by The Washington Post’s political blog, The Fix.
Higgins is MPBN’s chief political correspondent and State House bureau chief.
The list was generated from reader nominations via Twitter, Facebook, and comments on The Washington Post’s blog. Higgins was honored on the blog’s previous edition of the list in 2009.
Higgins came to MPBN in August 2007 after working as a staff writer for Blethen Maine Newspapers, where his reporting for the Kennebec Journal in Augusta also appeared in the Waterville Morning Sentinel, the Portland Press Herald and the Maine Sunday Telegram. Prior to joining the Kennebec Journal, Higgins served for 13 years as political editor and State House bureau chief for the Bangor Daily News.
“A.J. has been invaluable to the network for his political knowledge and outstanding reporting skills,” said MPBN’s CEO and President Mark Vogelzang. “It’s wonderful to see that his work is truly valued throughout the state but across the country as well.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
