Firefighters from 11 communities responded to a blaze that gutted a historic colonial Cedar Grove Road early Saturday morning.
Homeowner James Crawson had just left the home at 406 Cedar Grove Road when the Dresden Fire Department was called at 7:22 a.m., Fire Chief Steve Lilly said Sunday.
No one was injured in the fire, although Lilly said two cats are unaccounted for.
“When we arrived, there was heavy fire coming from the back ell section of the home, and it was spreading into the main section,” Lilly said. “It spread pretty rapidly from there.”
The home was “totally gutted inside,” Lilly said, and while the four outside walls were still standing, firefighters knocked them down as a safety precaution. “We did save some of his belongings, but not a whole lot.”
Automatic mutual aid from the Pittston, Richmond, West Bath, Wiscasset and Woolwich departments arrived, but additional firefighters were called in from Alna, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Litchfield, Newcastle and Westport.
Lilly was uncertain how the fire started.
