‘Marking Time’ at gallery

Painter Barbara Brady will exhibit a collection of her work, titled “Marking Time,” at Saccarappa Art Collective’s Main Gallery from Friday, June 28, through Wednesday, Aug. 7. An opening reception for the public is from 5-8 p.m. on June 28.

Brady draws on experience as a plein-aire landscape artist to produce her colorful abstract compositions through a process she describes as “much like the process of life the intention is direct but the experience is very emotional and intuitive.”

Anne Bernard’s encaustics and drawings will be showcased on the gallery’s Riverside Wall.

Bob Thomas will join as a special guest with member artists Andy Curran, Sherry Ballou, Mary Brooking, Jim Flahaven, Jeremy Greene, Caren-Marie Michel, Frank Valliere and Julie Vohs, who will also present new work.

Saccarappa Art Collective is committed to local and regional professional artists to the greater community. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday, noon-7 p.m.

Summer Learning Day on Friday

The Westbrook Community Center will host a kickoff to summer with on open house on Friday, June 21, from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. There will be children’s activities, hot dogs and lemonade and a chance to explore all the community center has to offer – summer programs for ages 4-14, fitness classes, adult education and more. A host of area service providers will also be on hand to answer questions and offer information.

The new Community Reading Room will open at noon. It is a place for children and caregivers to relax and read together. There will be giveaways and some special guest readers.

At 2:30 p.m., Walker Memorial Library will kick off its 2013 summer reading program, “How do You do That?” with Westbrook resident and distance swimmer Pat Charette. In addition to explaining how she was able to swim the English Channel, she will be reading her children’s book about her swim to Catalina Island, off the coast of California. There also will be food, prizes and games.

The Riverbank Park summer concert series 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays gets under way in Westbrook on July 10 and concludes on Aug. 21.

Westbrook City Band opens the series on July 10 followed by The Hurricanes, July 17; Now Is Now, July 24; Stolen Mojo, July 31; Pretty Girls Sing Soprano, Aug. 7; David Goode, Aug. 14; and Time Pilots, Aug. 21.

Kayak rentals will be available 4-8 p.m. and a family barbecue 5-7 p.m. benefits American Legion Post 62.

Admittance to the concerts is free.

Schools offering free meals

Westbrook School Department is sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program again with free lunches available Monday through Fridays to all Westbrook children under age 19.

The program begins on Monday, June 24, and continues through Friday, Aug. 23,

Street soccer free movie

Westbrook Soccer League is kicking off its inaugural Presumpscot Open street soccer tournament Friday night with a free outdoor screening of the movie, “Pelada.”

The movie is an award-winning documentary about two American collegiate soccer players who travel the world playing pick-up soccer. The screening, which is co-sponsored by the Westbrook Historical Society, starts at 8:30 p.m. at the Cornelia Warren Four Season Rink on Lincoln Street. Those attending are free to bring their own food and beverages, but chairs and bug spray are highly recommended.

Woman’s club wins awards

Westbrook Woman’s Club won multiple awards at last month’s spring convention of Maine’s General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Marian Sturtevant of the Westbrook club said it was awarded the Carolyn Lombardi Trophy for the second consecutive year.

“This is the fourth time our club has had this honor,” Sturtevant said in an announcement.

The club also took home a monetary award for its scrapbook that chronicled a history of its projects for the year along with programs and photos of participants.

A President’s Choice Certificate was awarded to the Westbrook club for a narrative of its lobster roll lunch program and its success as a fundraiser,

Sturtevant also said the club received a membership award and one of its art contest students placed third in the state contest.

“Marking Time,” a collection of work by painter Barbara Brady, will be on display beginning June 28 and continuing through Aug. 7 at Saccarappa Art Collective, 861 Main St., Westbrook.
