High school lacrosse is scheduled to take center stage tonight at Thornton Academy in Saco and Falmouth High School.
Boys in Saco
The Maine Lacrosse Coaches’ Association (MLCA) is set to host the inaugural doubleheader boys All-Star Lacrosse Showcase.
Sponsored by Atlantic Sportswear/LaxPros, the Showcase will get under way at 5 p.m.
The first game will feature the 14th annual MLCA Maine Senior Game. Top seniors from every high school program in the state will compete in their final game for a competitive farewell to their fans, schools and coaches.
Among those competing will be Will Hirnak (M) from Mt. Ararat, Morse’s Alexander Paulus (A) and Matt Buczkowski (LSM), Brunswick’s Alex Croatti (M) and Zach Hamm (LSM), and Freeport’s Galen Simmons, who finished the season with 19 goals and eight assists.
“This is a great game to recognize various seniors from programs around the state for their dedication and hard work as they move on,” said Brunswick coach Don Glover.
The second game of the night will be the first-ever MLCA Maine Underclassmen Showcase, starting at 7 p.m.
This game will feature the top underclassmen lacrosse players from Maine high schools statewide.
Playing for Brunswick are juniors Chris MrVichen (G) and Eli Down (D) and sophomores Cameron Glover (A) and Ryan Croatti (A). Sophomore Kevin Tolan of Morse (LSM) has been selected to play as well.
“After a full two-hour tryout/ screening, over 78 players, and four hours of the ninecoach panel evaluations, two top-level teams were created and I can honestly say this will be an awesome game,” said Glover, while adding, “all Dragon faithful should come on out to the Thornton Academy Turf Field to cheer these young men on … if you wear Orange and Black that would be cool, also.”
Girls in Falmouth
The annual Maine Lacrosse Coaches Association Senior Girls Game will kick off at 5:30 p.m. on the Falmouth Turf Field.
The roster will feature Sadia Crosby and Hannah Rossetti of Morse, Savanna Kay of Brunswick, and Jocelyn Davee and Molly Lane of Freeport.
A highlight of the night should be the presentation of the Flossie Smith Award, given to a senior in honor of the longtime coach an official who passed away from cancer.
The recipient exemplifies “qualities admired by Flossie, including passion for the sport, hard work and great sense of humor.”
Additionally, the Maineiax U13 and U15 squads will be scrimmaging during halftime.
