‘Baymen’ premieres on Saturday

The Freeport Shellfish Commission, Pinkhouse Production and Tiffany Converse Photography have produced a 10-minute public education video on clean water. “Baymen” will premiere on Saturday, June 15, at 7 p.m., at the Freeport Performing Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public. Donations to the Freeport Shellfish Commission’s Clean Water Fund will be accepted.

Public hearings scheduled

The Freeport Town Council has scheduled public hearings for Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m., in the town hall council chambers to discuss amendments the Freeport Zoning Ordinance pertaining to agriculture sections and definitions, and will hear discussion on a liquor license application submitted by Christian Erdmann, Jameson Tavern, 115 Main St. Information concerning these hearings can be obtained at the town clerk’s office, town manager’s office, the Freeport Community Library during normal business hours and on the town website.

Harraseeket Heritage Day, Harborside Gala June 22

The Harraseeket Heritage Day and Harborside Gala is Saturday, June 22, in South Freeport. The event will benefit the Freeport Historical Society.

Harraseeket Heritage Day events will be held from noon-2 p.m. at Brewer South Freeport Marine, with an entrance fee of $5 per person, or $20 per family. Deck tours of the Frances will be held during that time and are included in the entrance fee. There will be pirate-themed kids’ activities, knot-tying and oyster shucking demonstrations, and maritime shanties and jigs. Guided walking tours are $5 per person and will be led by architectural historian and author Annie Robinson. Two-hour sailing tours will depart at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with a limited supply of tickets for $30 per person available in advance.

The Harborside Gala begins at 6 p.m., also at Brewer South Freeport Marine. Tickets are $50 and are available in advance or at the door. There will be hors d’oeuvres, sushi bar, and music from pianist Warren McPherson offered during the silent auction. The live auction begins at 8, followed by live music and dancing, with the Jason Spooner Band performing.

Vintage baseball game on June 23

The Freeport Historical Society will be hosting the fourth annual Vintage Baseball Game on Sunday, June 23, at Pettengill Farm, on Pettengill Road. The day will begin with a baseball camp for kids ages 7-12 by Maine Baseball Hall of Famer Mort Soule from 10 a.m. -noon. The cost is $15 per child or $40 per family. Kids are urged to register early. There will be a Hit for Distance Contest from noon-12:20 p.m., followed by a Fun Flag Run from 12:30-1 p.m. At 1:15 p.m., Soule will read “Casey at Bat,” as he did at Fenway Park during Maine Day.

The Vintage Baseball Game between Dirigo (Maine) and Ipswich (Massachusetts) will begin at 1:30 p.m. The teams will play according to 1860 rules. Umpire Peter Pert will be on the field to explain the rules to the fans. Tickets are $5 for adults; members and children are free. The accordion band the Maine Squeeze will be performing and hot dogs, ice cream and beer will be available.

South Freeport church readies for festival

The South Freeport Congregational Church will hold its Summer Festival on Friday, June 28-Sunday, June 30. The festivities start on Friday with the jewelry, clothing and treasures sale from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and a lobster dinner for $20 or lobster and clams for $25 from 5-7 p.m.

On Saturday, there will be a large outdoor flea market, pie, craft and artisan food items sale, along with the jewelry, clothing and treasure sale. Lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. featuring a lobster roll for $10 or a hot dog for $5. A sock hop with music, trivia, hula hoops, classic cars, competitions, raffles and dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30 will feature a pancake breakfast from 8 -9:30 a.m. under the tent. Spring clean-up

Freeport residents will have the entire month of June to take advantage of spring clean-up at the recycling center. The town has sent residents flyers with a coupon for free disposal of one load of waste material at the recycling center, along with a list of acceptable household items. Acceptable material can be brought to the recycling center in June during the normal operating hours: Wednesday -Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Household hazardous waste coupons are also available to the first 100 residents who request them with a limit of one per household. The coupons have a value of $20 toward the cost of disposal of household hazardous waste at the Riverside Recycling Center, which is open the first Saturday of the month from April through November, 7 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Main Street construction

The Maine Department of Transportation is re-paving North Main Street and U.S. Route 1 between Maple Avenue and I-295 Exit 24. There will be drainage work and new granite curbs on both sides of the road between Maple Avenue and East Street. Delays can be expected. The project is scheduled to be completed by July 3.

Historical society hosting walking tours

The Freeport Historical Society is hosting guided walking tours of historic Freeport Village every Thursday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. beginning June 13. Tours start at the Harrington House, 45 Main St., and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear. Tickets are $10 for adults, FHS members are $5.

Shellfish license lottery June 17

Applications for recreational shellfish licenses are available for the period of July 1, 2013- June 30, 2014, at the Freeport Town Clerk’s Office during regular business hours. Licenses are limited and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Resident recreational licenses are $16, non-resident recreational licenses are $27 and three-day recreational licenses are $20. One non-resident commercial shellfish license and one resident student commercial license (age 14 to 26) are available for the 2013-14 licensing year. The deadline to submit an application is Thursday, June 13, at 6 p.m. The lottery drawing will be held at the Freeport Town Hall in the town clerk’s office on Monday, June 17, at 3 p.m.

Freeport Rotary races June 22

The 18th annual Freeport Rotary “Close to the Coast” 5K and 10K road race will be on Saturday, June 22 at 9 a.m., as part of the Winslow Park Family Fun Day. The top two finishers in each category win a pie from Orchard Hill Farm. There also will be a free 1K Kids Fun Run. Children’s prizes will be provided by Wilbur’s of Maine. There will be a free post-race barbecue to all racers and their children supplied by Buck’s Naked Barbeque with music from the Mallet Brothers. Library news and notes

Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.

The library is beginning its summer reading program with cool prizes, fun programs, neat crafts to make and amazing books to read. Sign-ups have begun in the Children’s Room.

Nicola McDowney will present a Puppet Show and Workshop on Thursday, June 20, at 10 a.m. with a double feature: “The Princess and the Pea” and “Swineherd,” followed by a puppet-making workshop. The puppet shows are open to all but the workshop has limited space. Advanced sign-up and details are available in the Children’s Room.

Zach Fields will present “Juggle your Way into Summer” on Wednesday, June 26 at 6 p.m. He will show participants the tricks of the trade.

The library will hold a New Books and New Series Day on Thursday, June 27 at 10 a.m. The presentation invites readers to look at and check out new books and series available at the library.

The library will feature Read to the Dogs on Friday, June 28 at 1 p.m. Four therapy dogs will be at the library to be read to by children. Sign ups and information are available in the Children’s Room.

Tracking Maine Mammals will be featured on Wednesday, July 10 at 6 p.m. Wolfe’s Neck State Park’s Making Tracks program will be at the library to teach what kinds of tracks animals leave behind and participants can make their own animal track to take home. Spaces are limited. Sign up in the Children’s Room.

There will be a class on Herbal Pillow Making on Thursday, July 18, at 10 a.m. Participants will be able to mix a blend of favorite fragrant herbs for their own pillow. Sign up in the Children’s Room.
