Harraseeket Heritage Day, Harborside Gala June 22

The Harraseeket Heritage Day and Harborside Gala is Saturday, June 22, in South Freeport. The event will benefit the Freeport Historical Society.

Harraseeket Heritage Day events will be held from noon-2 p.m. at Brewer South Freeport Marine, with an entrance fee of $5 per person, or $20 per family. Deck tours of the Frances will be held during that time and are included in the entrance fee. There will be pirate-themed kids’ activities, knot-tying and oyster shucking demonstrations, and maritime shanties and jigs. Guided walking tours are $5 per person and will be led by architectural historian and author Annie Robinson. Two-hour sailing tours will depart at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with a limited supply of tickets for $30 per person available in advance.

The Harborside Gala begins at 6 p.m., also at Brewer South Freeport Marine. Tickets are $50 and are available in advance or at the door. There will be hors d’oeuvres, sushi bar, and music from pianist Warren McPherson offered during the silent auction. The live auction begins at 8, followed by music and dancing, with the Jason Spooner Band performing.

Vintage baseball game on June 23

The Freeport Historical Society will be hosting the fourth annual Vintage Baseball Game on Sunday, June 23, at Pettengill Farm, on Pettengill Road. The day will begin with a baseball camp for kids ages 7-12 by Maine Baseball Hall of Famer Mort Soule from 10 a.m. -noon. The cost is $15 per child or $40 per family. Kids are urged to register early. There will be a Hit for Distance Contest from noon-12:20 p.m., followed by a Fun Flag Run from 12:30-1 p.m. At 1:15 p.m., Soule will read “Casey at Bat,” as he did at Fenway Park during Maine Day.

The Vintage Baseball Game between Dirigo (Maine) and Ipswich (Massachusetts) will begin at 1:30 p.m. The teams will play according to 1860 rules. Umpire Peter Pert will be on the field to explain the rules to the fans. Tickets are $5 for adults; members and children are free. The accordion band the Maine Squeeze will be performing and hot dogs, ice cream and beer will be available.

Spring clean-up

Freeport residents will have the entire month of June to take advantage of spring clean-up at the recycling center. The town has sent residents flyers with a coupon for free disposal of one load of waste material at the recycling center, along with a list of acceptable household items. Acceptable material can be brought to the recycling center in June during the normal operating hours: Wednesday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Household hazardous waste coupons are also available to the first 100 residents who request them with a limit of one per household. The coupons have a value of $20 toward the cost of disposal of household hazardous waste at the Riverside Recycling Center, which is open the first Saturday of the month from April through November, 7 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Freeport Players presenting ‘The 39 Steps’

The Freeport Players will present “The 39 Steps,” with Chris Holt, Chelsea Cook, Bill McDonough and Eric Worthley, and directed by Dan Burson. The production will run from July 18-Aug. 4 at the Freeport Performing Arts Center.

Shellfish license lottery June 17

Applications for recreational shellfish licenses are available for the period of July 1, 2013- June 30, 2014, at the Freeport Town Clerk’s Office during regular business hours. Licenses are limited and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Resident recreational licenses are $16, non-resident recreational licenses are $27 and three-day recreational licenses are $20. One non-resident commercial shellfish license and one resident student commercial license (age 14 to 26) are available for the 2013-14 licensing year. The deadline to submit an application is Thursday, June 13, at 6 p.m. The lottery drawing will be held at the Freeport Town Hall in the town clerk’s office on Monday, June 17, at 3 p.m.

Thrift shop expands hours

The Freeport Community Services Thrift Shop Annex has expanded its hours to include Wednesdays from noon-5 p.m., along with Thursday -Saturday, 9 a.m. -5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m. The shop features furniture, lighting, antiques and other collectibles.

July 4 events announced

The town of Freeport has announced its Fourth of July events for 2013. The day will start with a blueberry pancake and sausage breakfast at St. Jude Hall, on the corner of Main and School streets, from 7-10 a.m. The L.L. Bean 10K Road Race will take place at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Fun Run at 9:15 a.m. The parade will be at 10 a.m. on Main Street from Kendall Lane south to Holbrook Street. The L.L. Bean Discovery Park Concert will be Matt Nathanson at 7:30 p.m. The day will wrap up with fireworks at 9:15 p.m.

Community Services seeking volunteers

Freeport Community Services is in need of volunteers drivers to offer rides to medical appointments on a flexible basis. Help is also needed in the thrift shop and furniture store as well as other special projects. To volunteer, call Debbie at 865-3985.

Library news and notes

Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.

The library is beginning its summer reading program with cool prizes, fun programs, neat crafts to make and amazing books to read. Signups begin June 5 in the Children’s Room.

The Thursday midday movie on June 6 at 1 p.m. will be “Lincoln,” starring Daniel Day Lewis. The film is rated PG-13.

Puppeteer Nicola McDowney will present a puppet show and workshop on Thursday, June 20, at 10 a.m., with a double feature: “The Princess and the Pea” and “Swineherd,” followed by a puppet-making workshop. The puppet shows are open to all, but the workshop has limited space. Advanced sign up and details are available in the Children’s Room.

Zach Fields will present “Juggle your Way into Summer” on Wednesday, June 26, at 6 p.m. He will show participants the tricks of the trade.

The library will hold a New Books and New Series Day on Thursday, June 27, at 10 a.m. The presentation invites readers to look at and check out new books and series available at the library.

The library will feature Read to the Dogs on Friday, June 28, at 1 p.m. Four therapy dogs will be at the library to be read to by children. Sign ups and information are available in the Children’s Room.
