AUBURN (AP) — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Woods is turning up the heat on Rep. Mike Michaud, challenging him to decide by June 10 whether he’s entering the race for governor.
Woods, a businessman and Town Council chairman in Yarmouth, was the first declared candidate for governor in 2014, making his announcement in November.
Democratic Party leaders have made it clear to Woods that their preferred candidate was either Michaud or Rep. Chellie Pingree, he said. But Pingree already announced she’s staying put in Maine’s 1st Congressional District, shifting the focus to Michaud, a five-term congressman.
Also waiting in the wings is former Democratic Gov. John Baldacci, who said he’d consider running if neither Pingree nor Michaud choose to run.
