FREEPORT — L.L. Bean earned the top spot for outdoor stores as measured in the June edition of Consumer Reports.
The Freeport-based merchandiser earned an “89” out of 100, getting top marks in value, service, quality and checkout. The only knock on L.L. Bean — still earning it a “very good” — was selection. REI tied L.L. Bean with an 89, while Cabela’s was third with an 84.
Other local retailers making the list in other categories included Dick’s Sporting Goods, earning a 76 and 10th place among sportinggoods specialists.
Sears, Target and Walmart made the list among mass merchants.
Consumer Reports said that it surveyed 26,000 readers for the results, and that 88 percent reported being highly satisfied with independent stores and pro shops.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
