FREEPORT – Freeport jumped ahead in the early going against Wells Thursday afternoon, amassing a 10-3 lead by halftime on aggressive play by multiple athletes, including Jocelyn Davee and Meredith Broderick, on the way to a 14-9 win.

The Falcons, ranked second in Class B East behind Gardiner, snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 6-5 on the season.

For Freeport head coach Karin Kurry, Thursday’s success sprang from a diverse attack. “[We were] trying to have as many different scorers as possible,” she said. “And I think we had six, unless I’m counting wrong.”

Not only did Davee and Broderick score in the first half of the game, but so did Elizabeth Martin, Aubrey Pennell, Nina Martin and Bethanie Knighton.

Kurry also stressed starting with possession of the ball. “Trying to win draw control [was important as well],” she said.

Wells fought back in the second half, doubling their offensive output. Kurry blamed worse draw control in explaining what went slightly amiss for the Falcons. “First half, we did a much better job [of winning draw control] than we did second half,” she said.

Kurry also nodded at the Falcons’ flagging defensive efforts in the second half.

“Our defense did seem a little off, making some mistakes they don’t normally make…passing to the other team, not picking up the ball.

“First half it was awesome,” Kurry said, elaborating on the Freeport’s passing. “Second half, I don’t know if we were tired, or our aim was off, or we weren’t making the smartest passes or I think, also, [Wells] was starting to mark better, so we weren’t as open. I think their intensity, second half was much stronger. They were looking to the people we normally pass to, and…not letting them be open.”

But even Freeport’s mistakes combined with Wells’ renewed vigor wasn’t enough to upend the scoring. Wells put away six goals in the second half, and while Freeport only managed four less than half their tally in the first 25 minutes they nevertheless maintained the lead throughout. Davee blasted two more balls home, one after barreling through multiple layers of Wells defenders, and fellow Falcon Knighton beat the unguarded Wells goalkeeper after a fast breakaway from midfield. Martin drove the final nail in Wells’ coffin with just under 2:30 to play.

Davee had five goals in the victory, and Broderick had three. Knighton and Martin posted two a piece, while Pennell and Moore scored once each.

Kurry praised Broderick’s versatility in Thursday’s matchup.

“She played both offense and defense for us,” Kurry said. “She had some good ground balls and some good passes.”

She lauded her goalkeeper, Molly Lane, as well, pointing out that Lane’s talents will soon take her to even bigger stages.

“She’s doing very well…she’s definitely the anchor of the defense.” Kurry said. “She’s heading to Pennsylvania for the Maine team…[she] gets to see national competition.”

But Kurry emphasized her squad’s ability to work together above all else.

“I was very excited that it was a big team effort, that there were so many people that did different things,” she said.

With the season winding towards its close, Freeport sees the playoffs approaching. Kurry eagerly anticipates the competition. “Playoffs [are] looking great,” she said. “We’re just looking to get home field advantage; that’s what we’re fighting for now. Because it looks like we’re going to be lined up with Yarmouth, who are big rivals.”

The Falcons have one more bout to get through before tournament time, however. That game is a home again against Greely, scheduled for Thursday, May 30, at 4 p.m.
