Morrill award nominee

Roberta Dutton Morrill will be nominated by the Westbrook Woman’s Club for the General Federation of Women’s Club’s Jennie Award contest through the GFWC Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Each state selects one member to be entered in the region contest and a winner from each of eight regions is considered for the GFWC Jennie Award. It is the highest honor bestowed by GFWC and recognizes individual members for personal excellence in volunteerism and community service.

Morrill is a second-generation GFWC Maine member. Her mother was one of the early members of the Westbrook club. She remembers her mother entertaining the group in their home and some of the programs and projects. Morrill joined Westbrook Woman’s Club in 1997 and immediately became involved by serving on several committees – Education Awards, four years as chairman, and Community Improvement chairman, two years.

She became second vice president and program chairman, first vice president and membership chairman. Morrill was elected president in 2008. She then moved on to the board of directors, and serves as Maine Federation State Education Collaboration and Partnership chairman and is also a member of the State Scholarship Committee.

In 1949, Morrill joined the Westbrook Assembly No. 2 Order of the Rainbow Girls, from which she received the International Order’s Grand Cross of Color Honorary Degree. She is currently a member of Mizpah Chapter No. 3, Order of the Eastern Star.

She has volunteered with the Festival of Trees Committee and has helped coordinate its charity lunch. In 2011-2012, Morrill served on the Walker Memorial Library Restoration Committee and is the vice president of Westbrook Historical Society.

During a teaching career, she received many tributes, including the Catherine Sullivan Award for outstanding service, 1991; DARE Teacher of the Year, 1997; Outstanding Adult Education Teacher Award, 1985; and Distinguished Westbrook High Alumni Award for countless hours of service and devotion to the community of Westbrook, 2001.

Entering retirement, she joined the Cumberland County Retired Educator’s Association where she became chairwoman of the Christmas Scholarship Fair and Phone Pals Program. Currently, she serves as president. In 2012, she received the County Leadership Award.

“She continues to be a role model for women of all ages,” Carolyn Leavitt of Westbrook Woman’s Club, said. “With her warmth, energy, sense of humor, and dedication to the community around her, she epitomizes the GFWC volunteer.”
