GORHAM – Cindy Hazelton, director of Gorham Recreation Department, said the town would observe Memorial Day with its annual parade finishing at Eastern Ceremony on Main Street for a ceremony.
The parade forms Monday at 10 a.m. at Village Elementary School on Robie Street and steps out at 11 a.m. The parade travels onto Lincoln Street and along South Street to Main Street.
Parade color guards will include those of Gorham Police Department, Gorham Fire Department and Gorham Memorial Post 10879 of the VFW. Participating units will also include Scouts, athletic teams, antique vehicles and bands. The Gorham Lions Club float will display Gorham’s historic horse-drawn hearse in its first public showing in a quarter century.
The parade, led by a Gorham police cruiser, will pause at Phinney Park on South Street for a wreath laying at the veterans monument. The parade continues through Gorham Village along Main Street, ending at Eastern Cemetery for the observance.
A VFW squad will fire a rifle salute; Betty Rines of Gorham, a Portland Symphony Orchestra musician, will play “Taps,” and the Gorham High School Band will play the National Anthem. The Maine St. Andrew’s Pipes and Drums will play “Amazing Grace.” The Rev. Tim Higgins of Gorham will deliver the keynote address.
Earlier on Memorial Day, VFW Post 10879 leads an observance with a rifle salute at 9 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery on Huston Road. Following that ceremony, VFW members will toss a wreath into the Presumpscot River from the Little Falls Bridge on Route 202.
