Memorial Day observances in out area will be conducted with the full regalia of community parades and solemn ceremonies on Monday, May 27. Here’s the schedule for each municipality.

Cape Elizabeth

The annual parade begins at 9 a.m., and will go on, town officials say, “unless it is pouring rain.” The route begins at the intersection of Fowler and Old Ocean House roads, proceeds north on Route 77, and takes a left onto Scott Dyer Road to end at the War Veteran’s Memorial.

The Parade Marshall is John Rich, a Cape Elizabeth resident who served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

A brief laying-of-the-wreath ceremony will be held at the monument, after which residents and guests are invited to an open house at the Town Center Fire Station.

Veterans and groups interested in marching in the parade should contact Huebener by calling 767-1754, or emailing jhuebene@maine.rr.com. Anyone who has a family member serving in the armed services also is encouraged to contact Huebener so they can be recognized during the event.

According to Scarborough Community Services, there is one other public event planned for Memorial Day the third annual Kids Road Race. This year dubbed, “Kids running for grandpa,” the event is open to youngsters age 3-12. The $5 entry fee is reduced to $3 for children who bring a photo of their parent or grandparent in military uniform.

South Portland

The South Portland War Memorial Association will once again sponsor the city’s Memorial Day Parade, which steps off at 10:30 a.m. from the Southern Maine Community College main parking lot. From there, the procession travels west on Broadway to the Service Monument in Mill Creek Park, for a wreath-laying event.

There will be significant traffic impacts along the route from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
