CUMBERLAND – The Lake Region girls placed second with 69 points, narrowly edging out Freeport, Friday afternoon, while the boys took third with 36 points, falling further short of Freeport’s total. Kelsey Winslow’s victory in the 800m and consistency by Mason Kluge-Edwards in the hurdles helped secure the standings.
“[The meet’s] going fine,” Lake Region head coach Mark Snow said, as the action unfolded. “One key is to have people not get injured – so, we don’t have an injuries in the slippery conditions, that’s one concern.”
In the girls’ running events, Lakers Zsofi Kaiser (29.33) and Hannah Perkins (29.66) finished second and third in the 200m dash, while Perkins (1:05.09) won the 400m dash and teammate Kelsey Winslow (2:31.09) won the 800m dash. The girls took third in both the 4x100m (1:07.64) and 4x400m (5:04.16) relays. Kayla Gray won the 1600m race walk in a time of 8:35.16.
Snow explained how Lake Region is expanding its tactics as the season progresses. “We tried a couple things, like with Kelsey Winslow in the 800, and she ran that,” he said.
In throwing, Sarah Hancock took third in the shot put and second in the discus, and fellow Laker Molly Hook took third in the discus. Winslow took first in the javelin, Hook took second, and Kate Cutting finished third.
For the boys, Mason Kluge-Edwards finished second in the 110m hurdles (19.45) and third in the 300m hurdles (57.58). Kluge-Edwards also won the 1600m race walk, in a time of 8:58.93. Marcus Devoe finished third in the triple jump, while Mark MacDougall finished third in the javelin.
“A couple kids qualified for states today,” Snow said. “With think Mason Kluge-Edwards did in the race walk, and Audrey Blais in the 1600.
“The girls finished third in the state last year,” Snow said, “and we have essentially the same team – we have a couple girls that are injured, probably not going to be able to compete like they did last year, but we’re still looking to finish second or third in the conference. If everything falls into place, we could still be second or third in the state, even though we only have like 25 girls.”
