Then the news broke. Freeport starting goaltender Zac Wogan was injured, nursing a sore thumb and unable to play.
Freeport coach Geoff Arris turned to Troast, who had played goalie one time … five years ago.
Predictably, Yarmouth (4-1) did what it needed to do, scoring early and often in a 15-2 Eastern B victory, dropping the Falcons to 0-6 with a home date with Windham set for Saturday at 11 a.m.
Despite the lopsided setback, Arris and Troast were upbeat. Consider Troast, after allowing nine goals on the first 10 Clipper shots, found some flow, turning aside eight shots in all and giving the Freeport faithful something to cheer about throughout a closely played second half.
“He was a little bit hesitant, but said he would do whatever is needed for the team,” said Arris of Troast. “He said he played goalie once. I was very proud of him. He is a kid on the team who will do it all. He is just a pleasure to have on this team.
“The team had a lot of chaos in our warm-up, not knowing who we were going to play, and I just tried to tell them that our gameplan hadn’t changed.”
“It was just at the end of warmups, and coach asked me if I would play since I had a little bit of experience over the other guys,” said Troast. “It is one of the least sought-after positions in all of sports. I realized that it is hard to stay there and keep the intensity. I just tried to do my best.”
Yarmouth out quickly
The Clippers took the attack right to Freeport. Christian Henry scored just 29 seconds into the game, and goals by Ian Edgecomb, Joseph Oliva (assisted by Henry) and Henry a second time made for a 4-0 contest.
Yarmouth kept coming, scoring five more times in the opening quarter for a 9-0 lead.
Henry’s fourth tally early in the second quarter was followed by a goal each from Edgecomb, Walter Conrad and Oliva for a 13-0 Clippers advantage.
Freeport avoided the first-half shutout when Ashton Jordan fired a hard shot past Clippers netminder Connor Hoehle (four saves) with 15 seconds left until halftime.
Yarmouth’s backups spent a majority of the second half on the field, finishing with a slight 2-1 edge in scoring. Freeport’s Christo Provencher tallied for the Falcons.
“We are taking all the small steps necessary to improve,” said Arris. “Against Waynflete (a 19-14 loss on Saturday), we were down 7-1 at the end of the first, and after that we went goal for goal. I was very happy with them, and if we keep doing that, we will have success.”
Henry led Yarmouth with four goals and one assist, while Oliva tallied three goals and added two helpers. Edgecomb and Nick Ronan finished with two goals apiece, while Brendan Dioli had two assists.
Yarmouth held a 34-11 shots advantage and a 15-6 face-off edge.
