Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors thank the North Windham Union Church for its donation of $500 to help provide fuel for residents in need. This contribution is a result of the recent “Music with a Mission” bluegrass music concert held at the church on March 23. The church is holding monthly concerts and will use the proceeds to help support the church and its mission outreach to the community. More than 175 attended the first event.

Friends’ Beans

A baked bean supper will be held Saturday, May 4, from 5-6:30 at Friends Church, Route 202, Windham. The menu includes baked beans, brown bread, salads, pies, coffee and punch. Tickets are $7 for adults and $1 for children under 12.

Historic House Tour

On Saturday, May 11, the Windham Historical Society will hold a house tour including some of Windham’s most unique homes – the Parson Smith House, Moses Little House, Bodge House and Winslow-Chute House. Reservations are suggested. Suggested donation is $20 individual, $35 for two. This is a fundraiser for the Society’s Village Green project and details are available at www.windhamhistorical.org. Family Fishing Derby

The Donnabeth Lippman Park Family Fishing Derby will be held from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. Register by May 16 – call 892-1905! The derby is for boys and girls ages 14 and under. The derby is free so come down to fish or just take a hike around the pond. Bring your own bait and fishing gear. Prizes will be awarded for the smallest and largest fish caught in different age groupings. Prizes will be fishing poles for the biggest fish caught and tackle boxes for smallest fish caught. Donnabeth Lippman Park entrance is located off Route 302 behind the Sherwin Williams Paint store – the Park was formerly known as the Chaffin Pond Preserve.

Bean Supper

An “all you can eat” baked bean supper will be held Saturday, May 4, from 4:30-6 p.m. at White Rock Community Club on Wilson Road, off Route 237. In addition to beans, the menu includes macaroni and cheese, hot dogs, salads, biscuits and home made desserts. Adults $5, kids $4.

Military Benefits

On Wednesday, May 8, Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay is available at the Windham Veterans Center, as she is on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month, from 9 a.m. until noon. She assists veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed.

Veterans Meet

Windham Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10643 will meet on Wednesday, May 8, at the Windham Veterans Center. Supper will start at 5 p.m. and the meeting begins at 6 p.m. Installation of new officers for the coming year will be held. The Veterans Center is located in back of the Windham Mall/Hannaford. Take the Veterans Memorial Drive by Friendly’s and follow to the end.

Yard Sale

Unity of Greater Portland will hold its annual yard sale on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11. On Friday, hours are 2-6 p.m. and on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lots of great items. The church is located on the lower end of River Road.

Electronic Recycling

Residents from all towns are welcome to bring TVs, computer monitors, hard drives, laptops, printers, cordless phones, cell phones, VCR, DVD audio equipment, stereos, speakers – NO stoves, refrigerators, microwaves or freezers. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the Windham Mall, enter Veterans Memorial Drive (by Friendly’s). Donations accepted to cover cost of organizing. Donations benefit local mission needs via the Windham Hill UCC. Call 653-5989 with any questions.

Ride/Walk Mountain Division Trail

On Saturday, May 11, the Windham Active Lifestyles Coalition (WALC) will hold a fun ride/walk on the Mountain Division Trail to celebrate National Bike Month. Meet at the Gambo Road parking lot at 2:30 p.m. There will be several distance options and door prizes for kids.

Democrats Meet

Buy a Bale

The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals is holding a Buy a Bale campaign to help feed the horses they rescue. $5 per bale, and it feeds a horse for a day. Theater Tickets Raffle

The Windham Food Pantry is holding a raffle to win two tickets to the Oqunquit Playhouse this season and a $50 dinner gift certificate. Drawing will be May 30. To enter to win simply drop off three non-perishable items to the Windham Food Pantry and enter your name. Needed items are cereal, pasta, rice dishes, crackers, peanut butter and jelly. Three personal hygiene items are also needed: body wash, shampoo and toothbrushes. The tickets are good for any weekday show and are valued at $62 each. Plays featured are: Thoroughly Modern Millie, West Side Story, The Rat Pack is Back, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, and Young Frankenstein. Help the pantry and enter to win a night out.

The Windham Chamber Singers have recently returned from their annual spring tour which included stops throughout New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Above, the Windham Chamber Singers at the world’s longest covered bridge in Hartland, New Brunswick. Each year, the choir tours the Northeast presenting school workshops, assemblies and public concerts. The choir gave a total of 10 performances during the six-day trip that took place during April vacation. In addition to performing, the choir also raised more than $5,000 for different charitable organizations including the Alzheimer’s Society, the Summerside Food Bank, the Miramchi Folk Festival and Camp Centennial in Moncton, New Brunswick. Courtesy photo
