Causeway Update

Judging by the recent increased activity on the Causeway, I bet you have guessed that the construction crews have headed back to finish up the job. Right now they are placing more sidewalks and boardwalk down by the amputheatre area. One major thing on the list is the repaving of the road from Merced’s to Sun Sports, which will cause three or four days of major traffic delays. The mix the contractor placed did not meet MDOT specifications, so it needs to be removed and redone. Stay tuned, the dates are not yet available.

Edes Falls Update

I received a lovely phone call from Priscilla Kyle of the Edes Falls Sewing Circle last week. Priscilla told me she would send a copy of the group’s calendar of events for the year. This Saturday, May 4, the ladies will serve up their second Baked Bean Supper of the season from 4:30 to 6 p.m. There are many more fun events planned for your enjoyment. I will be sharing them as they come up, now that I have the official schedule! Priscilla also reminded me that not everyone knows exactly where the Edes Fall Community Center is and I agree. The address is 319 Edes Falls Road in Naples. By the way, the dinners are just $7.50 for adults and children up to 12 are just $3.50. Now where can you get a home cooked meal with all the fixings for that anywhere these days?

Let Them

Entertain You

Lake Region Community Theatre is pleased to announce their big, spring musical production, “Gypsy.”

In recent years, LRCT’s spring production has been performed on the stage at Deertrees Theatre in Harrison. With permission from Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc., LRCT will present Gypsy, based on the book by Arthur Laurents, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, on the stage at Lake Region High School in Naples this June. The show will run for two consecutive weekends beginning on Friday, June 21. Friday and Saturday shows will be at 7:30 pm, with Sunday performances at 2 pm.

Under the direction of Mary Bastoni of Fryeburg, the cast is currently rehearsing the musical fable based loosely on the memoirs of “The Lady of Striptease: Miss Gypsy Rose Lee.” Rose, an overbearing stage mother is obsessed with making stars of her daughters, especially June. Eventually she is forced to shift her hunger for fame to Louise, her less talented daughter. Join Rose, June and Louise in their trip across America during the 1920s when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. Expect lots of tap dancing and singing, including “Let Me Entertain You.”

LRCT hopes to again offer “dinner and a show” as they did last year when local restaurants provided delicious pre-play meals at discount prices to those who showed their tickets for that night’s performance. Stay tuned for more information about this opportunity.

Need Storage

In other LRCT news, the theatre group has outgrown its current storage facility. Set pieces and props ranging from the mundane (dishes and glassware) to the bizarre and unique, and costumes, are stored in several places. This is a great collection to draw from for upcoming shows, but now they would like to be able to store everything under one roof. They are looking for a barn or another permanent storage space with easy access to store their things. Ultimately, they would like to build a 30-square-foot structure, but need to secure funding and land. If you have such a facility and would like to donate the space to them, please contact Janet Ver Planck at lrct_me@yahoo.com.

LRCT scholarship

Taking their name to heart, Lakes Region Community Theatre awards a scholarship to a deserving individual of the community who has demonstrated a commitment to the theatrical arts. Any graduating high school or home-schooled student who has participated in a LRCT production may apply for this annual award to support the advancement of his or her academic or theatrical education. The scholarship deadline is May 15 and the award will be announced in June. Interested candidates must submit a completed application along with two letters of recommendation relevant to his or her theatre experience. The application is available at LRCT’s updated website: www.lrctme.org.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser at Colonial Mast

Swim your heart out for a great cause on Sunday, May 5. Ann Ruel, creator of the nonprofit wellness center, On Eagles Wings, is swimming 50 laps to raise money for her cause and work. Ann is looking for at least 10 sponsors to donate $1 per lap. She is also encouraging others to swim with her and get sponsors of their own.
