BOWDOIN

A small grass fire Thursday evening at a Litchfield Road property was likely caused by fireworks, officials said.

Firefighters from Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond were called to 65 Litchfield Road at 5:12 p.m. for a report of a 30-foot grass fire, with a tree also on fire.

The homeowner had doused most of the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived, Bowdoin Deputy Fire Chief Gerald Brown said.

Brown said the fire is presumed to have been started by fireworks, which the homeowner, William Sawyer, admitted using prior to the fire.

No charges are expected, Brown said, because it was on private property and “whatever was done was done legally and accidentally.”

Brown said it is a legal time for fireworks based on the state ordinance, but it was not legal to burn Thursday in Bowdoin. He estimated a 21-foot-by-17-foot area caught fire, including a tree.

Bowdoin rescuers responded to Sawyer’s address in September; he was injured in a fireworks accident and taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
