BRUNSWICK
Preliminary results of a recent audit confirmed that Brunswick has an adequate number of downtown parking spaces in its primary retail district, according to Council Vice Chairwoman Margo Knight.
Professional traffic engineers visited Brunswick earlier this month, and about 50 business owners and citizens attended a series of meetings to determine how to maximize Brunswick’s parking potential.
The finished report will be available within a few weeks, Knight said.
The study revealed that most of the parking spaces are in private lots, leading the town to work with private business owners to make spots available during peak shopping hours. Public parking also should be identified, the auditors said, and time limitation should be examined with a potential change from all-day to two- or three hour periods.
“The most interesting thing I’ve heard them say is that a parking garage or parking deck is the last resort, that they don’t work as well as managing the parking that we already have downtown,” Knight said.
Knight added that the Environmental Protection Agency bestowed an award for technical assistance on the town for its performance in the parking audit process.
