BRUNSWICK — Senior Carolyn Gorajek scored the game-winning goal with 2:02 remaining in the third overtime to lift the Bowdoin College women’s lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over Colby on Tuesday evening.

The goal rescued the eighth-ranked Polar Bears (10-2, 7-2 NESCAC), who squandered a six-goal lead over the final 16:32. The sixthranked Mules (9-2, 7-2) scored six times in the final 16 minutes to force the extra session.

Gorajek finished with four goals and two assists to lead all players, while goaltender Tara Connolly stopped 17 shots for Bowdoin in the victory. Jordan Smith added three goals, while Betsy Sachs had two.

Colby distributed its scoring among eight different players, led by two goals and two assists from Katharine Eddy. Lindsey McKenna had two goals for the Mules, while Michelle Burt (three saves) and Claire Dickson (five saves) split time in net for the visitors.

In the first OT, Gorajek and McKenna traded scores as the game entered the second OT tied at 10-10. After a scoreless second OT, Gorajek was awarded a free-position shot less than a minute into the third extra session. Bowdoin’s all-time leading scorer whipped home the game-winning score to clinch the win for the Polar Bears.

Colby held a 33-24 advantage in shots for the game, while Bowdoin committed 24 turnovers to 21 for the Mules. Meg Mooney had three caused turnovers and three groundballs for Colby. Eddy had five draw controls. Bowdoin’s Erica Nangeroni had two caused turnovers and three groundballs.

Softball

Gen Barlow hit a pair of home runs as Bowdoin swept the University of Maine- Farmington in a weekday doubleheader on Tuesday at Pickard Field.

Tricia Thibodeau allowed only one hit and one run in Bowdoin’s opening 5-1 win over the Beavers. Melissa DellaTorre came in and earned the win in Bowdoin’s 12-6 victory.

The Polar Bears are currently riding a seven-game winning streak and improved to 20-9, supplying coach Ryan Sullivan with his seventhstraight 20-win season. The Beavers dropped to 9-11.

The Beavers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the opening game following an RBI single to left by Kaitlyn Bartlett. Bowdoin answered an inning later. Siena Mitman laid down a two-out bunt and beat the throw to first base. Cielle Collins followed with a double to straight-away center that allowed Mitman to come home. DellaTorre stepped up with an RBI single to right, scoring Collins. Bowdoin was able to tack on another run with a lead-off solo shot from Barlow.

The Polar Bears’ next major scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth as Collins and Hanna Wurgaft hit back-to-back singles. Adriane Krul’s walk loaded the bases. Barlow hit a two-out single, which scored the runners from second and third, before getting caught in a run-down between first and second to end the inning. Bowdoin finished off the Beavers with a 1-2-3 seventh.

After only scoring one run in the opening inning of game two, the Polar Bears went on to score 11 additional runs. Katie Gately and Nicole Nelson each had a double while collecting a pair of RBIs. Barlow knocked out her second home run of evening, a two-run shot, as well as an RBI single. Victoria Rusch also collected a pair of RBI’s in the second and fourth innings. Julia Geaumont’s chipper to second also scored a run for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin combined for 12 hits in six innings to collect the win.

Men’s lacrosse

Colby scored three goals in the final quarter to knock off Bowdoin 8-6 on Tuesday evening.

Colby moved to 6-7 overall and 2-6 in league play. Bowdoin, ranked fifth in New England, fell to 7-5 overall (5-4 NESCAC).

John Jennings had four goals and one assist to lead the Mules’ offense, while Tyler Will led the defense with six of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter. Ben Brewster led Bowdoin with three groundballs and as many caused turnovers. Connor O’Toole accounted for two of the team’s six goals.

With the scored knotted up at 5-5, Colby opened the fourth with a three-goal run, which pushed the score to 8-5. Bowdoin scored the final goal of the game with 1:28 to play on a man-up score by Billy Bergner from Dan Hanley.

Baseball

Bowdoin scored three times in the ninth inning to rally for a 6-5 win at Husson on Tuesday evening.

The win improved the Polar Bears to 17-9 and extended their winning streak to eight games, the longest win streak for the program since winning 11 consecutive games in the 2006 campaign.

Down 4-3 heading into the top of the ninth, Erik Jacobsen led off with a triple and was replaced by pinch runner Kyle LeBlanc. LeBlanc scampered home on a passed ball to tie the game at 4-4.

Bowdoin took the lead with a two-out rally later in the frame as Tim McGarry walked and Aaron Rosen singled him to third. Luke Regan reached on a throwing error that brought home McGarry for a 5-4 lead and Sam Canales ripped a run-scoring single to center to up the lead to 6-4.

The insurance run proved crucial in the bottom of the frame as the Eagles scored to draw within a single run. But, David Zabinsky was able to get the final two outs with the tying run on third to secure the win.

Bowdoin had built a 3-0 lead early in the game before a four-run seventh gave the hosts the lead. Rosen had an RBI single in the first, Duncan Taylor came home on an error in the second and Rosen took a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to account for the Polar Bear scoring.

Harry Ridge tossed a solid 6.2 frames on the mound, allowing four earned runs and striking out seven in a no-decision. Kevin McDonough picked up the win with one inning of relief. Zabinsky escaped further damage in the ninth to collect the save.

Rosen had three hits in the win for Bowdoin and also walked. Taylor had two hits.
