It may not seem like it after the weekend’s winter-like weather, but the sunny season is right around the corner.

With that in mind, the Current is presenting a snapshot look at some of the area’s public golf courses:

Rivermeadow Golf Club

Overview: Sitting on 70 acres, the course has a combination of par 3s and 4s with two par 5s featuring varying degrees of difficulties.

Freeport Country Club

Overview: Situated just minutes from the L.L. Bean flagship store as well as the shopping and sites of Freeport, the Freeport Country Club is a fun, popular 9-hole track.

Bridgton Highlands

Overview: A beautiful and challenging 18-hole golf course with great mountain views located in the heart of Maine’s Lakes Region in southwestern Maine near the New Hampshire border. The course has four sets of tees and a maximum length of 6,335 yards.

Twin Falls Golf Club

Overview: The course offers seven par 4s and two par 3s. Its hilly terrain and doglegs provide a challenge. Tee times are not offered over the phone; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Gorham Country Club

Overview: The course covers 180 acres of state game preserve and features generous fairways and soft greens.

Overview: Nonesuch River Golf Club features an 18-hole 6,300-yard, par 70 course designed by Tom Walker of Golf Design Studios in Palm Beach, Fla. In addition to the course, Nonesuch features a 2,500 square-foot clubhouse, a practice range, two putting greens and a golf academy.

Overview: The 6,086-yard, par 70 course has scenic rivers bordering both the front and back nine. The course also features a pro shop, putting green, rental clubs, push and electric carts and food and beverage is available.

South Portland Municipal

Overview: Tucked in the woods just minutes from the Maine Mall and Portland International Jetport, Sable Oaks offers an escape from all the hustle and bustle with its trees, ponds, soft fairways and rolling greens.

Overview: The course has received high marks from numerous publications. On the website, course designer and golf architect Brad Booth says, “I wanted to build a course people will enjoy playing, but giving a real stiff challenge from the back tees.”

Frye Island Golf Course

Overview: This island golf course, which was built in 1972, only has nine greens, but each hole has two sets of tees that allow golfers to play 18 holes with a different look on each nine. The course, which is only accessible by ferry, has a clubhouse and a pro shop and refreshments are available.

Overview: Part of the Point Sebago lakeside resort, the Point Sebago golf course caters to golfers of all levels of experience. Located on 500 acres of birch forest, the par 72 course ranges from just over 7,000 yards from the back tees to 3,200 years from the front tees. Point Sebago also features golf clinics and golf schools with PGA professionals and has an extensive practice center with a driving range and putting greens for practicing putting, chipping, pitching and bunker shots.

Naples Golf

Overview: The Naples Golf and Country Club, which was established as a nine-hole course in 1921, opened its back nine in 2000. The course, which is located along Brandy Pond, offers lessons as well as a pro shop, equipment repairs, food and beverage and wireless Internet access.

Salmon Falls Golf Course

Overview: Golfers will enjoy the challenging, picturesque course which slopes back from the river banks. Starting times required on weekends and holidays. Leagues are welcome. Memberships available.

Overview: An 18-hole course set on the coastal terrain of Old Orchard Beach. Dunegrass features seven holes with water. The seventh hole is rated the toughest on the course and has the length to challenge any golfer as the par 5 is 556 yards from the back tees.

Overview: Deep Brook bills itself as “Southern Maine’s best valued 9-hole course,” and the low rates certainly give that claim some validity. The par 36 course features a practice green, cart rental and a full pro shop.
