Coach: Brody Artes
Last year’s record: 13-6 (lost in semifinals to Scarborough)
Key players: Shawn Francoeur, Joe Francoeur, Nate Boyle, Calvin Field, Jack Herzig, Spencer Hodge, Tanner Laberge
Key games: Portland, Scarborough, Cheverus, Thornton, Westbrook
Outlook: Artes looks to seniors Shawn Francoeur and Boyle to lead the Eagles from the mound, where the team is quite deep, with six possible starters. Junior Herzig is among the best catchers in the SMAA, while junior Hodge and sophomore Laberge are expected to contribute big on both offense and defense. Artes says the team could be a contender in the SMAA if their pitching is consistent and their defense “nearly errorless.”

Last year’s record: 3-13
Key players: Colleen Holtan (sr.), Haley Plante (sr.), Julia LoSciuto (sr.)
Key games: Sanford, Gorham, Bonny Eagle
Outlook: The Lady Eagles look to build off a tough 2012, Tucker says. Katelyn Tucker and Miranda Richards will handle pitching duties while veterans Holtan, Plante and Madison Elliot will anchor the infield. Morgan Richmond and LoSciuto are both three-year starters in the outfield and solid defenders. Sadie Nelson, a freshman, steps in behind the plate. Mary Sarwari, Katie Hunter, Tameika Girardin, Abby Gordon, Monica Harris, Lily Macpherson, Antia Mooradian and Abby Gardner will fill the remaining spots.

Last year’s record: 2-10
Key players: Matt Aldrich, Zach Davis, Christian Coons, Damian Cummings, Danny Stewart, Owen Philips, Liam Sullivan, Ryan Schweitzer, Regan McCarthy, Christian Zwirner
Key games: Deering, Portland, Cheverus, Thornton
Outlook: “This year’s team has more experience and depth than in previous years,” says Small. “A strong test will be how soon the team can play together as a unified group. The team chemistry is strong and already the mix of players have elevated their game.” Small believes defense will be an Eagles’ strength again this season, but also sees increased skill at midfield and attack. “The team looks to play a faster game this year.”

Coach: Deb Lebel (6th year)
Last year’s record: 4-8
Key players: Nicole Kennedy (sr.), Christina Pollard (sr.), Emily Gilman (jr.), Lauren Coughlin (sr.), Haley Batchelder (jr.)
Key games: Scarborough, Cheverus, Kennebunk
Outlook: “We realize this could be a rebuilding year,” Lebel says. “We’re hoping some of our younger athletes are ready to take on bigger roles this season.” Lebel notes that Kennedy has trained a great deal in the offseason, Pollard produced 22 goals last season, and Gilman has great offensive potential as well. Coughlin won a defensive player award last season, and Batchelder should be ready to step up her contributions on defense as well. “We lost four or five games last year by two goals or less, so we know we can compete,” Lebel said.
