Girls Track and Field
Coach: Erin Maguire (fourth year)
Last year’s record: 21st at states, 7th at WMC championships
Key players: Audrey Garcia, Liz Audet, Kierstin Stritch
Key games: Wells/Sacopee Valley
Outlook: Maguire’s team lost many veteran athletes in 2012. This year, they look to rebuild with some quality returning sophomores and a large crop of freshman. Maguire intends to focus her squad on technique and power. “The numbers are solid,” she says, “and the general team dynamic as been positive and hard-working, so I look forward to seeing what surprises lie in store for us this spring and who is going to rise to the occasion.”
Boys Track and Field
Coach: Todd Mercer
Key players: Adam Dumas, Will Shafer, Eli Locke, Josh Greenleaf, Scott Espling, Dylan Frisbee, Danny Rowe, Austin Cross, Ben Garcia, Ben Rogers, Brandon Ruminski
Key games: “Most of our regular season meets are ‘practice’ for the Western Maine Conference meet,” Mercer says. “Of course we would like to win, but winning is not the focus during the regular season.”
Outlook: This year is a rebuilding year, according to Mercer but not, he stresses, because the team lacks talent. “We have a handful of boys who will score at every meet.” Instead, Gray-New Gloucester is retooling its program “with a new emphasis on building a complete athlete.” Mercer is stressing functional strength, agility, and technique rather than merely endurance this season. He says his kids are “responding well to the new practice structure. Everyone is busy all the time. I couldn’t be more proud of the work our athletes are doing.”

Key players: Kyle Neilsen, Kevin Cavallaro, Brandon Hubbard, Justin McKenna, Tyler Credit, Tyler St. Pierre
Key games: “The next one on the schedule,” Smith says.
Outlook: “The 2013 Patriots will be young and inexperienced,” Smith says, “having graduated six defensive starters and four pitchers. Returning senior starters Cavallaro (3B) and Neilsen (P), and junior McKenna (2B) will lead a group of young but promising underclassmen.”

Coach: Amanda Harmon
Last year’s record: 14-5
Key players: Alex Thompson, Sandy Ricardi, Zoe Adams
Key games: “All of them,” says Harmon, while singling out Fryeburg and Greely as particularly important
Outlook: Harmon looks to return strong with an entire team of reliable athletes. Gray-New Gloucester graduated only one last year, so 11 return, bringing valuable experience. The addition of new players will open up options, revealing strengths in diverse situations. “Positive attitudes, focus, determination and desire will carry us throughout the season,” she says.
