Coach: Steve Martin

Last year’s record: 6-10

Key players: Patty Smith (sr.), Erin Smith (sr.), Gabby Martell (sr.), Sam Robinson (jr.), Emily Deluca (jr.), Kara Stahl (sr.), Katelyn Wilson (jr.)

Key games: Bonny Eagle, Sanford, Massabesic, McAuley.

Outlook: Martin’s key games are early in the season, because they will “set the stage for the rest of the season. Win or lose,” he says, “it is important to play well in each of those games.” Gorham made the playoffs last season for the first time in several years. They lost in the first round, but this season return numerous players, and hope to make another playoff run, this time with improved results.

Coach: Chuck Nadeau

Last year’s record: 4-12

Key players: Damon Wallace (sr.), Alex Yankowski (sr.), Elliot Speirs (sr.), Spencer LaPierre (sr.), Chris Hardy (sr.), Alex McCarthy (sr.), Dylan Turner (jr.), Nick Greatorex (jr.)

Key games: “It is a strong and deep league,” Nadeau says, “so every game is important and challenging.”

Outlook: Pitching will be critical for Gorham, and Nadeau sees depth among his staff. “The development of two or three key guys from a longer list of pitchers with great upside potential will have a big impact on how quickly we can establish ourselves as a playoff threat,” he says. The Rams have critical players returning at most positions, making them a veteran team with playoff potential.

Coach: Dan Soule (2nd year)

Last year’s record: 4-8

Key players: Caleb Dolloff, Colin Harvey, Anthony Coppolla, Frank Pappalardo, Mike Susi, Matt Petty, Matt Esposito

Key games: South Portland, Westbrook, Marshwood

Outlook: 2013 will be an opportunity for the Rams’ underclassman to step up into varsity roles and contribute, Soule observes. The team graduated nine in 2012, so their success in 2013 “will be determined by the maturity, character and will to win and compete of the juniors and sophomores.”

Coach: John Caterina (20th yr.)

Last year’s record: 7-5 regular season, 2nd place at SMAAs, 5th place at states

Key players: Celeste Carpenter (sr.), Ashley Hasenflu (sr.), Marissa Rush (sr.), Kristin Ross (sr.), Patty Smith (sr.), Bridget Stillson (sr.), Karen Knight (jr.), Kelsey Mitchell (jr.), Hannah Southard (jr.), Sophia Swiatek (jr.), Jackie Turner (jr.), Laura Turner (jr.), Kristin Benson (so.), Leeanna Gray (so.), Rebekah Hall (so.), Blanca Monson (so.), Abby Perkins (so.), Kayleigh Smith (so.)

Key games: “The key for the regular season is qualifying as many girls [as possible] for the SMAA and State Championship meets,” Caterina says.

Outlook: Caterina believes “Gorham could be the biggest surprise in the SMAA this year.” A large turnout has given the Rams some “very talented” newcomers, who could make Gorham one of the teams to beat in the SMAA. One of Caterina’s primary goals will be developing the freshmen and new sophomores.

Connor Dunn is one of the few returning athletes to a Rams track and field team that graduated many seniors from last year.

Dylan Turner, a junior, is one of the veterans on the Rams baseball team, which coach Chuck Nadeau hopes will establish itself as a playoff threat.

Sam Robinson, pictured here rounding second last year, is one of coach Steve Martin’s key returning players on a Gorham softball squad that went 6-10 last season.
