The Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department is investigating the disappearance of a 1971 Chevy Chevelle convertible from a storage building at a Woolwich residence.

The green car with white racing stripes was reported stolen from a residence along U.S. Route 1 in Woolwich at around 11 a.m. Monday. It was least seen a week prior to when it was reported, Sagadahoc Sheriff ’s Lt. Calvin Temple said.

Temple said there was no sign of forced entry and investigators still aren’t sure how the thief or thieves got the unregistered car out of the garage — which is located a long distance from the home but near Route 1.

The battery was dead and the dual-exhaust V8 engine would have produced a loud rumble if the car was started.

According to the owner, the car is in mint condition, all original and worth $35,000, Temple said.
