BATH
A Bath Middle School student told police Tuesday night that she refused a ride from a man after he twice asked directions from her while she walked home from track practice.
Bath Police Chief Michael Field said today the 11-year-old girl was walking near High and York streets when a man in a small black sedan stopped and asked directions to the middle school.
She gave the man the directions, then he stopped again and asked directions to Morse High School, Field said.
“She said no (when he offered her a ride), and continued on her way home,” Field said.
The girl told Officer Shaun Cavanaugh an hour later that the car had a loud exhaust.
Police encourage people with information that might be helpful to call 443-8339.
“It’s really very troubling — disturbing,” Field said. “All of our officers are aware of what is happening here.”
Field said the girl acted correctly in refusing the ride.
“Don’t take rides from strangers,” he said. “Immediately go to a safe house and report these incidents.”
Field said that the girl was “pretty upset and rightfully so” following the incident.
