GORHAM – A fugitive wanted for 35 years was scheduled for arraignment at 1p.m. on Friday, March 29, in Cumberland County Courthouse after being arrested at home in Gorham this week.

Lt. Christopher Sanborn of Gorham Police Department said in a report that Gary A. Irving, 52, of South Street, Gorham, was arrested without incident on March 27.

“The Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section had identified Gorham resident Gregg A. Irving as 52-year old Gary A. Irving, a wanted fugitive from justice,” the report said. “Irving was wanted on a Massachusetts Superior Court warrant, which charged him with three counts of rape, kidnapping and unnatural acts stemming from an incident which occur in 1978.”

Irving was convicted in Massachusetts and fled, according to police.

Gorham police located Irving and assisted Massachusetts and Maine state police units in the arrest. Maine State Police took Irving to Cumberland County Jail in Portland. Sanborn said the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit continued investigating the case.
