According to a press release issued by Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, a man and woman fled after robbing a Rite Aid Pharmacy in Yarmouth minutes before the crash. The car was being chased by Yarmouth police when the driver lost control attempting to exit I-295 at Mallett Drive, McCausland said. Troopers said the driver was 21-year-old Dylan Libby and his passenger was 18-year-old Madeline Damon. Both are from North Yarmouth, although the two had recently moved to Bangor. Both are hospitalized with multiple injuries. No charges have yet been issued against the two. Yarmouth police are expected to file charges in connection with the robbery in the near future. While on scene of the crash and ensuing investigation this afternoon, Yarmouth Police Chief Michael Morrill said at 3 p.m. police received three 911 calls reporting that the Rite Aid Pharmacy had been robbed. “Responding officers cornered the individual as he was leaving the scene,” the police chief said, but the suspect drove around police. A chase ensued, which included an initial vehicle crash in Yarmouth. Yarmouth officers pursued the car into Freeport where it rolled over on the exit ramp. Both occupants were taken to the hospital but Morrill had no information on their conditions. Morrill said the Maine State Police were reconstructing the crash scene and police were investigating the scene at the Rite Aid in Yarmouth, which will help determine what charges may be levied against these individuals. Asked what the suspects got away with from the pharmacy, he said police were taking an inventory to determine what is missing. There was no indication the suspects had a weapon during the robbery but whether they were armed will be part of the investigation. “As you can see this is a very serious situation,” Morrill said. “It shows you how desperate these people are, when they’re robbing places like this, to get away from the scene and to get away from police.” During the chase, the car driven by the suspects crashed into a car at the East Main Street ramp and Route 1 intersection in Yarmouth. Morrill said he did not yet know how fast the car was traveling. A police dog was on scene searching for any evidence that may have been dropped by one of the occupants fled the car after the crash but who was apprehended by the Yarmouth officers. One of the officers involved in the chase sustained a minor hand injury.

Exit 22 was expected to be closed for the evening commute, but the Interstate remained open.
