WINDHAM — The superintendent of the Windham-Raymond School District will present his proposed $39.8 million budget to the school board on Wednesday.

The proposed increase in the budget – $880,000 over the current year – is “salary-driven,” said Superintendent Sandy Prince. He said teachers will not be getting a step increase next year, but will be getting a 2 percent raise.

Prince said Gov. Paul LePage’s proposal to shift retirement costs from the state to school departments would add a $522,000 expense for the district. He said the school department’s state subsidy is also down by $202,000.

Although Prince did not know how much the proposed budget would affect taxes in the two towns, he said, “there will be a tax increase of some sort” if his proposed budget passes.

Prince would not say whether he’s proposing any layoffs.

The school board meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Windham Council chambers.
