AMHERST, Mass. — Amherst College took control midway through the first half and eliminated the University of New England from the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament with a 71-34 second-round victory Saturday night.

The Nor’easters saw their 20-game winning streak end and finished at 25-5, advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time.

Saturday’s game was a sharp contrast to UNE’s 67-58 triumph Friday over Bridgewater State. Amherst (28-1) was aggressive on defense and limited the Nor’easters to 19 percent shooting.

Beth Suggs led UNE with 10 points. The Lord Jeffs had five players in double figures.
