RUMFORD — The Freeport and Merriconeag boys and girls competed in the State Class C Skiing Championships on Tuesday with Giant Slalom action at Big Rock and Nordic Freestyle at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque isle.
Nordic action also wrapped up in Class A also with Mt. Ararat in action at Black Mountain Ski resort in Rumford.
Merriconeag sweeps
In Freestyle action on Tuesday, the Merriconeag boys took first place with 35 points, followed by Fort Kent (45), Freeport (53), Madawaska (93) and Dirigo (132).
Daniel Streinz of Katahdin took first place in the 5K with a time of 13:07.9, followed by Jack Pierce of Merriconeag (13:43.30.
Top Freeport skiers was Forrest McCurdy in fifth (14:38.7).
Other Merriconeag finishers included Ben Tindall (7th, 14:45.6), Graham Roeber (9, 14:50.5), John Burgess (17, 15:43.9), Zachary Neveu (24, 16:23.2) and Lars Gundersen (34, 17:32.0).
Top Freeport finishers included Forrest McCurdy in fifth (14:38.7), Elijah McCurdy (11, 15:09.9), Zachariah Merrill (15, 15:42.4), Mason Cyr (22, 16:16.0), Nicholas Nelsonwood (28, 16:50.6) and Bennett Brainard (44, 18:23.8).
The Merriconeag boys won the combined Nordic with 63 points, followed by Freeport (96), Fort Kent (109), Madawaska (190), Winthrop (254), Dirigo (267), Waynflete (308), Orono (311), Boothbay (334), Monmouth (364), Mountain Valley (390), North Yarmouth Academy (434), Telstar (496) and John Bapst (566).
In girls Freestyle on Tuesday, Merriconeag was first with 46 points to win its third straight crown, followed by Freeport (66), Fort Kent (195), Orono (196) and Dirigo (226).
Hannah Streinz of Katahdin was first in 16:02.6, followed by Lydia Streinz of Katahdin (16:16.9), Freeport’s Elizabeth Martin (16:36.5) and Merriconeag’s Emeli Chace-Donahue (16:54.5), Samantha Pierce (17:03.2) and Zoe Chace-Donahue (17:11.4).
Other top Merriconeag finishers included Teagan Wu (8th, 17:53.0), Lily Tupper (14, 18:55.1) and Carlin Tindall (17, 19:14.7).
Other top Freeport finishers included Virginia Moore (9th, 18:19.8), Bethanie Knighton (10, 18:30.1), Fiona Ahearne (12, 18:39.7), Lia Wellen (20, 19:30.1) and Lily Lamarre (29, 20:31.5).
‘C’ Giant Slalom
In the combined GS action on Tuesday, Freeport’s Ryder Bennell and Blake Enrico finished 1-2 at Big Rock, 1:27.75-1:29.18.
Also skiing well for the Falcons were Caleb Abbott (sixth, 1:30.91), Brady Davis (10, 1:32.78), Charlie Zachau (20, 1:39.58) and Alex Salisbury (21, 1:39.68).
Freeport took the GS team event with 19 points, followed by Fort Kent (24), Mountain Valley (58), Central Aroostook (60) and Telstar (106),
For the girls, Fort Kent was first with 43 points, followed by Mountain Valley (48) and Freeport (66).
Top Freeport skiers were Taylor Enrico (4th, 1:34.12), Wynne Cushing (6, 1:37.03), Julia Schneider (19, 1:40.57) and Lucy Zachau (37, 1:56.54).
Katherine Collette of Mountain Valley was first in 1:30.92.
Class A
On Tuesday, the Falmouth boys and girls wrapped up their Nordic championships.
The boys won the Freestyle event 42-50 over Mt. Blue, while the girls beat out Portland 30-41.
The boys’ combined score was 84, followed by Mt. Blue (112), Leavitt (121), Fryeburg Academy (189), Portland (201), Deering (227), Greely (253), Mt. Ararat (267), Hampden (316), Scarborough (452) and Oxford Hills (461).
The Falmouth girls won 61-79 over Portland, followed by Leavitt (93), Oxford Hills (140), Mt. Blue (144), Fryeburg Academy (258), Mt. Ararat (276) and Greely (378).
Silas Eastman won the 5K Freestyle in 11:45.6 to beat out Ben Allen of Portland (12:21.9).
Top Mt. Ararat skiers were Sam Wood in fifth (12:50.5), followed by Nathan McKenzie (40, 15:31.5), James McCracken (41, 15:38.6), Connor Read (49, 16:30.5), Jonah Levy (53, 17:15.7) and Thomas Emerson (55, 17:39.4).
Sarah Wade of Mt. Blue captured the girls 5K in 14:56.06 to beat out Abby Popenoe of Portland (15:06.9).
Top Mt. Ararat skiers included Torri Pelletier (20, 17:47.80, Emma Levy (34, 19:04.5), Marie Ring (42, 20:55.9), Bronwyn Caswell-Riday (45. 21:25.7) and Eleanor Skinner (46, 21:52.8).
Brunswick’s Lena Martin was 13th overall in 16:57.1.
First-day action
The State Class A Ski Championship Women’s Classic event was held Monday at the Black Mountain Ski Resort in Rumford.
In girls action, Falmouth (42) took a first-day lead, followed by Mt. Blue (62), Leavitt (62), Fryeburg Academy (95), Deering (99), Portland (107), Greely (117), Mt. Ararat (133), Hampden Academy (153), Scarborough 233 and Oxford Hills (235).
Emily Bland of Windham won the 5K event in 16:30 with Wade of Mt. Blue (17:02) in second.
Mt. Ararat competitors included Pelletier (16th, 20:02), Levy (36, 22:17), Ring (38, 23:26), Caswell-Riday (44, 24:10) and Skinner (48, 26:06), while Brunswick’s Martin placed 27th in 20:41.
In the boys Classic, Falmouth was first with 31 points, followed by Portland (38), Leavitt (45), Mt. Blue (68), Oxford Hills (75), Fryeburg (132), Mt. Ararat (135) and Greely (196).
Eastman of Fryeburg finished first for the boys in 13:22, while Dustin Ramsay of Hampden was second in 13:57.
Top Mt. Ararat skiers included McKenzie (34th, 17:45), Read (43, 18:54), McCracken (46, 19:28), Nathan Sprague (53, 20:40) and Levy (55, 21:16).
Class C
The State Class C Championships got under way Monday with Classic competition at the Nordic Heritage Center.
The Merriconeag girls took first overall with 15 points led by Emelie Chace-Donahue, who took third overall in 19:23.
Freeport took second (24), followed by Orono (87), Dirigo (92), Fort Kent (94), Telstar (122), Winthrop (123), Monmouth (143), Waynflete (157), Boothbay (167), North Yarmouth Academy (170), Fort Fairfield (196) and Mountain Valley (231).
Lydia Streinz of Katahdin won the event in 18:55, beating out Hannah Streinz of Katahdin (19:19).
Top Merriconeag girls included Pierce (5th, 20:21), Wu (7, 20:49), Zoe Chace-Donahue (8, 20:50), Tindall (13, 21:38) and Tupper (21, 23:01).
Top Freeport competitors included Martin (4th, 19:46), Moore (10, 21:36), Ahearne (17, 22:30) and Wellen (24, 23:17).
The Merriconeag boys led the way with 20 points, followed by Freeport (35), Fort Kent (56), Madawaska (89), Winthrop (107), Dirigo (123), Orono (143), Waynflete (153), Monmouth (165), Boothbay (166), Mountain Valley (186), North Yarmouth Academy (191), Telstar (246) and John Bapst (258).
Lance McKenney of Fort Fairfield won the overall title in 15:48 to beat out Daniel Streinz of Katahdin (15:59).
Top Merriconeag skiers included Pierce (4th, 16:11), Roeber (6, 17:21.4), Tindall (7, 17:21.9), Burgess (11, 18:12), Neveu (29, 20:00) and Gundersen (31, 20:23).
Top Freeport skiers were Elijah McCurdy (8th, 17:21), Forrest McCurdy (9, 17:28), Cyr (10, 18:02), Merrill (16, 18:46), West (21, 19:26) and Nelsonwood (28, 19:59).
On tap today is Class C Slalom action at Big Rock with boys at 9:30 a.m. and girls at 12:45 p.m.
