The Cape Elizabeth High School girls swimming team held on in a four-team battle to capture the Maine High School Girls Class A State Swimming and Diving Championships on Tuesday at Bowdoin College’s Greason Pool.

The Capers finished with 282 points, with Brunswick taking second with 268.5 points. Deering was third with 248, while Bangor was fourth (245.5). Cheverus (199) was fifth, with Massabesic (130), Messalonskee (117), Mt. Ararat (107.5), Morse (106) and Gorham (101) rounding out the top 10.

Brunswick’s Jessica Russell captured the 200 freestyle in 1:56.49 and took second in the 100 backstroke in 58.20 Cheverus’ Sarah Nappo (57.40). Russell also anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay of Emma Blair, Madeline Cowan and Lynsie Russell, which touched in 1:41.92.

 
 
Lynsie Russell won the 500 free in 5:25.64 and finished third in the 200 free (1:59.81). Also for Brunswick, Paige Tetu was fourth in the 200 IM (2:17.93) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:04.20), Blair tied for fifth in the 50 free (25.79) and was seventh in the 100 back (1:05.55), Cowan took fifth in the 100 free (57.52) and seventh in the 50 free (25.92) and diver Olivia Dumont was fourth in the one-meter event with 228.10 points.

In relays, the 200 medley team of Taylor Godbout, Tetu, Quinn Alexander and Blair touched in seventh (2:01.91), while the Dragons’ 400 free of Lynsie Russell, Tetu, Cowan and Jessica Russell was third (3:47.92).

Celia Ouellette shines

Mt. Ararat’s Celia Ouellette joined Deering’s Genna Worthley with two individual wins, taking the top spot in both the 50 free (state record time, 23.84) and 100 free (53.29). She also anchored the Eagles’ sixth-place 200 free relay squad of Molly Huey, Hannah Kincaid and Libby Ouellette, which touched in 1:49.28.

Also for Mt. Ararat, Libby Ouellette tied for fifth in the 50 free in 25.79.

Morse picked up points in the 200-medley and 200-free relays. Bronwyn Morissette, Catie Luedee, Allison Plummer and Madison Burch were sixth in the 200 medley in 2:00.87, and the same foursome was sixth in the 200 free in 1:49.80.

Individually, Luedee was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.07) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:00.87), while teammate Plummer was eighth in the 500 free (6:02.28).

Worthley was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet after wins in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke (state record, 1:03.72). Cape Elizabeth’s 200 medley team also set a state mark after swimming a 1:50.17.
