City teacher nominated for statewide award
Karen McDonald, a language arts teacher at King Middle School since 1989, is one of 14 nominees for the Maine Teacher of the Year Award.
MacDonald has about 35 years experience in Portland schools, as an ed tech, in the gifted and talented program at Longfellow Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School, and as a fourth and fifth grade at the former Baxter and Nathan Clifford elementary schools. MacDonald has taught at King since 1989.
Managed by the Maine Department of Education with financial support from Hannaford Bros., and Bangor Savings Bank, the Maine Teacher of the Year Award begins with nominations made by parents, students or staff at a school.
The selection process requires in-class visits from department officials and presentations by teachers to a selection committee. The winner is announced at a surprise school assembly each September.
