Down East magazine, based in Rockport, will be opening an office in Merrill’s Wharf in Portland to give the glossy magazine a presence in the state’s biggest market.

“Portland’s on a roll and we want to be a part of it,” said Bob Fernald, president, chief executive and publisher of Down East. “Portland is Maine’s largest media market. It makes sense for the state’s largest glossy magazine to have a presence there.”

The new office will have five sales associates and one editorial employee who previously worked from home in southern Maine, Fernald said.

Down East’s home office is in Rockport, where it employs about 45 workers. The magazine was founded in 1954.

Portland is already home to two other general interest magazines – Maine magazine and Portland Magazine.
