FREEPORT – Freeport’s latest “silver bullet” recycling location on Hunter Road features the colorful work of artist Sebastian Meade.

The 33-year old Freeport native spent two months last summer creating the images, which feature wide-mouthed monsters eating each other’s tails.

“Basically, the theme is to literally feed the monster,” Meade said during a Feb. 5 ceremony at the Hunter Road recycling station.

Meade was one of 12 winners of ecomaine’s Recycling is a Work of Art contest, in which artists were commissioned to paint silver bullets, the single-sort, portable recycling bins common in the majority of recycling centers. Meade said he used acrylic paints for his creation and was careful to follow the guidelines set forth by ecomaine, which included using all four sides of the bin and allowing access through the sliding doors for recyclables.

Cherie Rexroad of the Freeport Recycling Committee said her group coordinated with ecomaine to have Meade’s creation on hand for the opening of the Hunter Road location.

“This is an eye-catcher and draws attention to the site. It helps to get the word out,” Rexroad said.

According to Shelley Dunn, communications specialist for the Portland based ecomaine, the colorfully adorned bin will rotate locations throughout the nonprofit’s 45 participating communities.
