FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says outfield prospect Bryce Brentz accidentally shot himself in the leg last month, but could recover in time to play in spring training.
Cherington said Saturday that Brentz was cleaning the gun went it went off. The bullet passed through Brentz’s left leg.
Cherington said Brentz wasn’t doing anything illegal. The GM said the team had talked to the 24-year-old about the accident.
Brentz was a first-round draft pick by the Red Sox in 2010. He hit a combined .290 with 17 home runs and 76 RBIs last season in Double-A and Triple-A.
Brentz posted a message Saturday on Twitter saying he would return to full practice today. Brentz is in Fort Myers, Fla., where the Red Sox hold spring training.
