Four Red Claws playing in D-League All-Star game

Four players from the Maine Red Claws were selected Monday to play in the NBA Development League All-Star game next weekend.

Guard Shelvin Mack, forward DaJuan Summers, forward Chris Wright and guard/forward Micha Downs were picked.

Maine led the league with the four selections, who will be part of the Futures team coached by Mike Taylor of the Red Claws.

The game is at 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center.

WNBA: Sophia Young, the leading scorer for the San Antonio Silver Stars last year, has a torn knee ligament and will have surgery, making her status for 2013 uncertain.

WORLD CUP: The World Cup qualifier between the United States and Honduras on Wednesday is such a big deal the day has been declared a national holiday.

Six teams remain in this regional — the U.S., Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Panama. The top three advance to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The U.S. seems a safe bet to advance — it has qualified for every World Cup since 1990, and is 12-3-3 against Honduras.

MLS: The New Jersey Red Bulls traded leading scorer Kenny Cooper to FC Dallas for allocation money.

Acquired from Portland in January 2012, Cooper had a team-high 18 goals and three assists in 33 regular-season games last year. Cooper played for Dallas from 2006-09.

MLS: Jozy Altidore wants to move on from last week’s racist chants directed at him during a Dutch Cup game on Jan. 29.

“It was an unfortunate event and very disappointing for everybody involved,” Altidore said. “I just hope that we can all just be better and that it never happens again.”

The referee had wanted to stop AZ Alkmaar’s 5-0 win over Den Bosch, but Altidore, who is black, and his teammates persuaded him not to.

VTR OPEN: Rafael Nadal’s injured left knee is getting better, although his coach, uncle Toni Nadal, said it may bother him for a few more weeks.

Nadal practiced for a fourth straight day of training since arriving in Chile for his first match in more than seven months.

The seven-time French Open champion opens up Tuesday in the VTR Open, playing doubles with Argentine Juan Monaco.

Nadal will be a prohibitive favorite to win a title here against a relatively weak field.

HORSE RACING

RECOVERING: Jockey Ramon Dominguez was moved to a rehabilitation center in White Plains, N.Y., as he recovers from a skull fracture suffered in a spill at Aqueduct last month.

Dominguez, injured on Jan. 18, has won the last three Eclipse Awards as the nation’s leading rider.
