Powell Point hike scheduled
As part of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, a Powell Point trek in South Freeport on the Cousins River has been scheduled for Friday, Feb.15, from noon-2 p.m. Those planning to attend should meet at the Powell Point trailhead, at the end of the pavement on Lambert Road, one mile off South Freeport Road near the Freeport YMCA. Bring snowshoes or boots with traction depending on conditions, and plan for a 1.5-mile round trip trek to a dramatic bluff over the lower Cousins River.
Trek leaders are David Steckler, chairman of the land acquisition committee of the Royal River Conservation Trust, and Katrina Van Dusen, executive coordinator of the Freeport Conservation Trust. They will chat informally about the success of the two organizations preserving the Cousins River and opportunities for future collaboration.
The event is free, with no advance registration required. For more information, call Katrina at 865-3985, ext. 212.
Public hearing on Hunter Road parking
A public hearing was scheduled to be held Tuesday, Feb. 5, after the Tri-Town Weekly’s deadline, at the Freeport Town Office to discuss parking restrictions on Hunter Road in the vicinity of the Hunter Road Recreational Fields.
According to Freeport Town Engineer Albert Presgraves, the ordinance would address overflow parking during athletic events on the Hunter Road Recreations Fields access road.
“During some of the games, people didn’t park in the parking spaces provided at the facility but rather on the side of the access road,” said Presgraves.
The proposed ordinance came at the suggestion of the Hunter Road Fields advisory committee, which is recommending that no parking be allowed on both sides of Hunter Road and or on undesignated areas of the access road.
“It wasn’t enforceable before because there was no an ordinance,” said Presgraves.
