Maine’s first lady, Ann LePage, will appear at a veterans’ appreciation event Saturday where family members will recognize veterans and receive medals.
LePage will join Peter Ogden, director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services, at a Topsham American Legion post to present awards to local veterans and their families.
As part of the state’s ongoing Honoring Maine Veterans Recognition Program, 25 local veterans are expected to receive an honorary service award from the bureau recognizing and thanking them for their military service.
In addition, four local families will receive a Blue Star Service banner to honor loved ones who presently serve in the Armed Forces.
Sons of two veterans will receive their father’s longoverdue military medals.
Harry Alexander Jr., of Brunswick, will receive his father’s World War II medals and Joe Toth of Brunswick will receive his father’s Korean War medals — highlighted by a Purple Heart with three stars. These medals were acquired by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, RMaine, and sent to Brunswick Post 20 for presentation.
Brunswick Legion Post 20 and Topsham Post 202 will host the program beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Legion post, 79 Foreside Road.
The public is welcome to attend. For information about the program visit the Bureau of Veterans Services website: www.maine.gov/dvem/bvs/H onoring_ Maine_ Veterans.htm.
