WESTBROOK – The Westbrook boys basketball team moved to 11-3 on the season with a 67-46 win over visiting Thornton Academy on Tuesday night. The loss snapped an eight-game win streak by the Golden Trojans (9-6), who went cold just about the time the Blazes were heating up.
After a back-and-forth first half it seemed it was either team’s game to win – or lose. The teams went into the locker room at halftime with Westbrook ahead by two, 31-29.
Midway through the third quarter, however, the game belonged to Westbrook.
Zack Bean and Aquoi Alexander provided the momentum. Both players were scoreless in the first half, but knocked down two 3-point shots each in the third quarter to help push Westbrook to a 51-38 lead.
Foul trouble and cold shooting in the fourth quarter continued TA’s slide, and Westbrook pulled away for the win.
David Breunig led the way for the Blue Blazes with 15 points. Bean added 13 points, while Alexander and Keenan Lowe contributed eight each.
TA’s Jeff Gelinas led all scorers with 16 points, all in the first half. Fellow Golden Trojans Evan Wright added 11 points and Quinn Richardson-Newton added 10 points.

TA’s Jeff Gelinas (11) caused all sorts of problems for Westbrook in the first half, getting the ball down low, putting in the shot and drawing fouls with a power move under the basket. Gelinas led all scorers with 16 points, but all of them came in the first half.
David Breunig (25), one of Westbrook’s four senior captains, goes strong to the hoop early in the first half. Much to the dismay of the hometown crowd, there’s a lot of contact but no foul call, and he loses the ball. Breunig led the Blue Blazes with 15 points, including 5 of 6 shooting from the foul line in the second half.
David Breunig (25) has a better outcome on this play, getting a pass in the paint, pivoting to the hoop and putting in the shot to give Westbrook a 40-35 lead halfway through the third quarter.
Keenan Lowe (23), one of Westbrook’s four senior captains, drives the baseline in the second half. Lowe had eight points.
Westbrook junior Aquoi Alexander drives a dagger into TA’s hopes with a third quarter, 3-point shot, one of two he made. He finished with 8 points, all in the second half.
A block of loud and happy Westbrook students supported their team from behind the home bench.
Zack Bean, one of Westbrook’s four senior captains, finishes off a steal and a fast break with a lay-up. He finished with 13 points, all in the second half, including three 3-point shots.
Aaron Duncanson, one of Westbrook’s four senior captains, gets the ball down low and puts it up high – and in – for two of his seven points.
Another good defensive play by TA’s Evan Wright (20, partially obscured), who draws a charge that negates a Zack Bean drive and basket.
