BRUNSWICK — Typically when we think about the “buy local” movement, we think of clothing and food, but never recycling — until now.
It was recently announced that Restwend, L.L.C., owner and operator of 14 Wendy’s fastfood restaurants throughout the state, including the locations in Brunswick and Topsham, has made the decision to work with Maine Standard Biofuels to move forward regarding grease removal from their locations.
Jason Gall, president of Restwend, said that the group wanted to work with a local company whose services and products benefit individuals and companies, rather than leaving the state with no benefit to the community.
Portland-based Maine Standard Biofuels collects used restaurant grease from kitchens and recycles that grease into biodiesel and bioheat. These products have less harmful emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuel and foreign oil.
Jarmin Kalstas, president of Maine Standard Biofuels, said this could be a “gamechanger for the company.” The 14 Wendy’s regularly produce thousands of gallons of grease that can be turned around and offered for commercial and public consumption.
