BRUNSWICK
A movement is taking shape to label a section of Maine Street, from Pleasant to Mason streets, as an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
Claudia Knox, chairwoman of the Brunswick Downtown Association’s Design Committee, and Annie Robinson, architectural historian and agent with local company Morton Real Estate, are spearheading the process.
“Brunswick already has at least a dozen individual properties listed on the Historic Register, and it has three separate historic districts,” Robinson said. “But this will be the first one that will value the core of the public and retail sector of our town.”
Carrying the designation also makes the town eligible to apply for federal and state grants to rehabilitate historic structures within the districts, Robinson said.
A public meeting to discuss the proposal is scheduled for Feb. 7, 5:30 p.m., at the Curtis Memorial Library’s Morrell Meeting Room.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
