BRUNSWICK — The second annual Martin Luther King Day pasta supper will be held on Monday at the First Parish Church’s Pilgrim House from 5 to 7 p.m.

The supper, organized by the Brunswick Democratic Town Committee, is a nonpartisan event to raise money for the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, celebrate Maine’s role in advancing civil rights from the 1800s to the present day, and echo Martin Luther King’s call to service.

“In January and February, donations tend to fall off because it’s after the holidays,” said Karen Parker, executive director of the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program. “Last year’s event gave us a boost and helped put the issue of hunger back on people’s minds.”

The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Kenneth Lewis, pastor of Green Memorial AME Zion Church in Portland.

The suggested donation is $7 per adult, and children younger than 12 eat free. On the menu will be pasta with homemade meat or vegetarian sauce, hand-made focaccia, salad and several kinds of freshly baked cakes.

Organizers stress that this is not a political fundraiser. Proceeds will go to the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program. Free child care will be provided at the event.

“Last year was the first year we were able to put an event like this together, and it was a big success,” said Jackie Sartoris, an organizer for the supper. “Over 100 people came, and we raised over $1,000 to help our neighbors in need.”

“This will be an excellent opportunity for families from all walks of life to come together to celebrate King’s legacy and help our neighbors gain access to the food they need during this cold winter,” said state Rep. Matthea Daughtry, DBrunswick.
