WESTBROOK – Sappi Fine Paper North America is investing $2.5 million to rebuild a piece of equipment at its Westbrook mill.
The company announced Jan. 9 that it would rebuild a 50-year-old coater, the No. 20, one of six at the mill.
“This is tremendous news for the Westbrook mill,” said Donna Cassese, managing director of the Westbrook facility, in a news release. “Over the past few years, we have made significant gains in safety, yield, equipment reliability, and productivity; all of which have strengthened our market position globally. These accomplishments helped set the stage for the decision to invest in our Classics line.”
According to Cassese, a coater applies a formula on base paper allowing the paper to be used as a mold for the manufacturing of synthetic leather.
The No. 20 coater was originally built in 1962 at the Muskegon Mill in Michigan. In 1976 the coater was moved to Westbrook.
Cassese said the investment will make upgrades in the web handling, coating and drying capabilities of the machine.
The Classics line produces textures and patterns for synthetic fabrics used in cars, shoes and clothes, as well as laminate surfaces like floors, kitchens and bathrooms.
“We’re thrilled. We think Sappi is a great corporate partner and member of the Westbrook family,” said Bill Baker, Westbrook’s assistant city administrator for business and community relations.
The coater is projected to be rebuilt by May.
