Another small snowstorm for Maine today with several inches of snow that will be plowable for some places and give southern Maine back its snow cover.  This is great news, as we have a blast of very cold air for next week and bare ground with sub-zero temperatures can cause damage to pipes and plants. Even two inches of snow can insulate the ground quite nicely.  If you are a golfer, a bit of snow on the greens is great to protect them too.

The snow this morning is being caused by a low pressure area to our south .  This storm will quickly move south of Cape Cod and then out to sea.  The snow will be heaviest from now until about noon over southern areas and 3 PM to the north.  Along the coast, especially east of Portland, the snow may mix with some rain or just be so wet it doesn’t accumulate as much.  Areas like Harpswell, Wiscasett, to Rockland run the greatest chance for any mixing or a brief change to rain.  A change to rain isn’t likely, but is something to keep in mind. To the west, across ski country the snow will be very light and fluffy, but not much will accumulate.

Thursday into the weekend

Tomorrow will be a nice mid-winter day with a blend of sunshine and clouds and temperatures around freezing or slightly milder.  It turns colder for Friday with highs in the teens and 20s north to south and a bit of wind.  As we move into the weekend we will watch a very strong arctic front start to head for Maine.  Saturday, we are on the warm side of this front with highs in the 30s and not much wind. Saturday is a great day to ski. Sunday, as the front pushes south will turn colder, but not bitter cold, that will take until Monday.  Next week will feature the coldest air of the winter so far.  This will be the kind of cold that we normally expect a few times during a typical Maine winter, but we have not seen this in a few years.  Highs Monday and Tuesday will be in the single numbers to the north and teens to near 20 across southern York county.  

Gardening this week I have a new video to show you this week on moving a tree. You might think big deal, right? However, the tree that got moved was done so without hurting any roots.
