DAMARISCOTTA — Lowe’s home improvement stores are teaming up with the Great Salt Bay Community Playground through the company’s “Lowe’s Heroes” program to help make sure the Damariscotta playground gets built on schedule this summer.

According to a news release, the company will donate materials, lend tools and equipment, and send employees to help with the barn-raising construction.

Lowe’s Heroes is the company’s outreach program, which contributes to communities around the country through various projects including improvements to community facilities, disaster relief, and building playgrounds and hockey rinks. Last year, Lowe’s Heroes sponsored 1,400 programs throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The GSB playground will be a joint project between the Lowe’s stores in Thomaston, Brunswick and Auburn. So far the company has donated $4,700 worth of materials, which they are storing until the build date.

“We will be able to send 20 to 25 skilled volunteers each day of the playground build,” said Bill Doehring, manager of Lowe’s in Thomaston. “We love to help build playgrounds. This is a wonderful community, and we are glad to be able to help out.”

The GSB playground fund is about halfway to a goal of $85,000 in funds raised, funds committed and in-kind donations. Because Damariscotta has no town park, this new playground will serve not only students who attend Great Salt Bay School, but also families who use the playground on weekends and after school hours.
